The Ducati 1098 is a motorcycle model in the Superbikes category from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati .
The 1098 was developed under the responsibility of the Italian engineer Andrea Forni and was presented on November 8, 2006. It is the successor to the Ducati 999 and the predecessor of the Ducati 1198 and, thanks to its technical innovations, is one of the most successful motorcycles in racing.
technology
In contrast to the very modern and often criticized predecessor Ducati 999, the design of the 1098 with its side by side headlights, the single-sided swing arm and the no longer integrated, twin-pipe exhaust system is based on that of the Ducati 998 . In addition to a more powerful engine, the development goals were improved handling and reduced weight through the use of lighter components and materials.
The V-engine generates a nominal output of 119 kW (160 hp ) and a maximum torque of 122.6 Nm from a displacement of 1099 cm³ .
The Ducati 1098 is equipped with the data analysis system , which, like in racing, enables the reading and analysis of data that was collected while driving. It also has a multifunction display derived from the MotoGP replica Desmosedici , which shows not only speed and engine speed, but also cooling water and ambient temperature.
Model variants
The motorcycle was offered in three variants that have the same engine:
- the 1098 is equipped with a Showa chassis
- The 1098 S has an Öhlins chassis and is fitted with forged Marchesini light alloy wheels
- The 1098 S Tricolore also has a 102 dB racing exhaust system from Termignoni with carbon fiber -sheathed rear silencers, a modified engine control unit and a three-color paintwork
1098 R
General
The Ducati 1098 R was the top model of the 1098 series and the homologation model for use in racing. It was only produced in small numbers and cost around 35,000 euros in Germany . With a dry weight of 165 kg and an empty weight (full tank) of 190.5 kg, it was the production motorcycle with the best ratio of torque and weight that has been built to date.
A 1198 cm³ engine is used in the 1098 R , which is constructed similarly to the 1099 cm³ unit, but has a 106 mm bore and 67.9 mm stroke as well as milled cylinder heads. The engine has a nominal output of 132 kW (180 hp) at 9750 rpm and produces a maximum torque of 134 Nm at 7,750 rpm. Unlike the other 1098 models, the motorcycle has an anti-hopping clutch and an optimized Öhlins chassis. The motorcycle comes with a race kit , consisting of a non-street-legal exhaust system and the associated engine control unit, which includes an increase in output to 186 hp and, for the first time on a street motorcycle, traction control. In the meantime, Ducati has also adapted the type designation of the "R" to "1198 R", following the displacement.
Use in motorsport
Like the top versions of its predecessor models, the Ducati 1098 R formed the basis for the racing machines used in the Superbike World Championship and many other Superbike championships.
Since two-cylinder engines develop less power compared to four-cylinder engines with the same displacement without expensive modifications that would reduce their service life, the technical regulations of the Superbike World Championship have been changed. From 2008 this allows a maximum of 1200 instead of 1000 cm³ for two-cylinder engines. For this reason, the 1098 R was homologated with the 1198 cm³ engine from the start.
Troy Bayliss celebrated his first victory on the 1098 R of the Ducati works team in the first race in the Superbike World Championship in Losail ( Qatar ) . Bayliss then became World Superbike Champion on this motorcycle at Magny-Cours .
