Testastretta engine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Testastretta engine from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati is a water-cooled 90 ° V2 engine (called "L-Twin" by Ducati because of its forward-sloping installation position ), each with two overhead camshafts driven by toothed belts .

The Testastretta engines have a displacement of 748, 749, 821, 937, 998, 999, 1099 and 1198 cm³ and four desmodromic valves per cylinder. Testastretta can be roughly translated as "narrow head". This indicates a narrow cylinder head , but not the head itself is narrow, but the angle between the inlet and outlet valves, which is 25 degrees. This results in a compact and efficient combustion chamber. Ducati developed special flat pistons for this engine. With these measures, a very effective linear flame front is achieved during combustion. A better filling of the cylinders can also be achieved, which has a positive effect on combustion and thus on power output and efficiency. The Testastretta engine therefore has a higher peak output than the previous Desmoquattros .

In 2006, the “Testastretta Evoluzione” engine was used for the first time in the Ducati 1098 Superbike , with a displacement increased to 1099 cm³, among other things. With the introduction of the Ducati 1098 R , the displacement was further increased to 1198 cm³. Ducati consequently changed the model name to Ducati 1198 . This displacement variant was later also available in the cheaper models. In autumn 2009 Ducati presented the new Multistrada 1200, which is powered by a specially revised Testastretta Evoluzione , also with 1198 cm³. The 1099 cm³ variant is still used in the Ducati Streetfighter model .

In 2013 Ducati used the Testaretta with 821 cm³ and water cooling in the Hypermotard and Hypermotard SP and in
2016 the Testaretta 11 ° with 937 cm³ in the Hypermotorad 939 and the Ducati SuperSport 939 .
