Neu-Deutz colliery, 1858

The “Neu-Deutz” lignite mine was an attempt to supply the emerging industry in the Cologne suburb of Kalk with locally generated energy. After it had been discovered that the lignite deposits on the left bank of the Rhine also continued beyond the Rhine, consideration was given to mining these deposits. The mine was built around 1850. However, the project failed because of the excessive groundwater inflows, which can be explained by the proximity of the Rhine.

In 1858 the Sünner brothers bought the site and built their new brewery there, which started production in 1860. This system still exists today and has been in operation with numerous modernizations. The brewing water is taken from the former mine shaft.
