The Ducati 999 is a model of the superbike series 999/749 from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati .

The model series designed by Pierre Terblanche came onto the market in 2003. However, the futuristic design was controversial, especially since it replaced the 916 series , which was considered a design icon . In the following years, too, not all friends of the brand were enthusiastic about the design of the 999.

The 999 was replaced four years after its appearance by the Ducati 1098 series, which now again showed many design features of the 916 series such as headlamps located next to each other, double exhaust under the seat and single-sided swing arm.

Model variants

There are several variants to choose from. All are powered by a liquid-cooled 90 ° Testastretta L-Twin with four desmodronically controlled valves per cylinder and electronic fuel injection. The power is transmitted via a hydraulically operated multi-plate dry clutch and a 6-speed gearbox to an O-ring chain. The engines differ in terms of stroke, bore, compression, channel processing, the models continue to differ in terms of equipment and chassis components.

The 999 was a maximum of 110 kW / 150 hp, the most powerful twin-cylinder production motorcycle in the 1,000 cc class. The stable and precise driving behavior was particularly highlighted in tests. In direct comparison to competitors, the disadvantage is the slightly higher weight and the poorer handling, among other things because the wide 190 rear tire does not harmonize well with the narrow 5.5 "rim, usually 6" rims are installed here. According to experience reports, the improvement is brought about by changing to a tire size 180 / 55-17.

Racing

The 999 was very successful in the FIM - Superbike World Championship with three world championship titles and numerous racing victories, whereby the regulations initially benefited the two-cylinder engines. In the meantime the regulations have been changed and there is a greater equality of opportunity between the two- and four-cylinder motorcycles, with now slight advantages for the four-cylinder. For this reason, Ducati sought a change in the regulations for the 2008 Superbike World Championship with regard to an increase in displacement to 1200 cc for two-cylinder motorcycles, which was decided by the FIM.
