The Ducati 900 SS (built 1991–1997) is a motorcycle model from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati .

history

The modern 900 Supersport builds on the classic with a vertical shaft motor . However, it is a newly developed model with camshaft drive via toothed belts . The forerunners of the 80s with vulnerable Weber carburettors and the very hard chassis were replaced.

In 1991, Cagiva / Ducati changed basic components. They separated from suppliers with quality problems and turned to Japan . The models offered in 1991 were technically a leap forward. Japanese electrical and ignition systems from Kokusan, as well as Japanese spring elements from Showa, guarantee a high level of quality. All Ducati SS models from 1991 with two 38er- Mikuni - carburetors equipped. The seating position and chassis were absolutely suitable for everyday use. Only the tight steering angle remained. The machine is equipped with a fairing, double disc brake as well as a fully adjustable upside-down fork and an oil cooler. The gearbox and clutch came from the 851 series , which improved shiftability. The rattling, stiff and hard-wearing multi-plate dry clutch is particularly appreciated by many drivers because of the uncompromising racing technique. The air / oil-cooled cylinders are supplied with cooling oil, which is returned to the engine housing via external lines. The white frame and wheels made a striking contrast to the red or black paintwork. Like all Ducatis, the 900SS also has a desmodromic valve control .

The new look in connection with good driving performance led to the fact that the model was sold in large numbers and developed into a best seller.

The machine was initially only built with full cladding (Carenata), later also with a half-shell (Nuda). The Superlight version was slightly lighter and equipped with a one-man hump seat and braking torque support on the rear wheel. Over the years there have been some minor model maintenance measures (material changes to the cylinder stud bolts, improved piston rings, exhaust valve guide in bronze-brass, carburettor heating, reinforced rear swing arm, offset oil cooler, ventilated side panels, oil thermometer, optimized engine housing ventilation valve, larger front wheel axle diameter, clutch and brake pumps with external fluid reservoirs). The engine is also identical in the Ducati Monster (900 cm³). In 1998 the Supersport was replaced by the 900 SS i. e. with injection engine.

The machine is still extremely popular today. There are various accessories with which the motorcycle can be individualized and upgraded.

Strengths of the 900SS

  • powerful engine with a lot of torque
  • sporty chassis enables precise and stable driving, even at high speed
  • There are a lot of accessories that allow individual conversions
  • constant used prices, hardly any loss of value

Weaknesses of the 900SS

  • occasional stress cracks on the frame head
  • likewise cracks on the rear swing arm in the areas of the swing arm axle and suspension strut mount
  • minor weaknesses were fixed as part of the facelift
  • Rusted fuel tanks: The drainage of the tank filler pot leads through the tank with a hose. A pipe bend is soldered to the bottom of the tank. This rusts on the inside and the water can no longer run off. Every time the tank lid is opened, the accumulated water sloshes into the tank and collects there on the bottom of the tank.

Chiara special model

The Ducati 900 Chiara is a motorcycle model from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati . The carburetor model with toothed belt drive was introduced in 1996 as a limited special model of the Ducati 900 SuperSport. Only a few models were commissioned by the German importer DNL from the Hegemann company. The published numbers vary between 37 and 50 models. In fact, 50 machines were originally commissioned, but only 37, in the following colors, were built:

  • 20 × red
  • 14 × silver (in two different variations)
  • 1 × blue
  • 1 × green
  • 1 × Land Rover green
    • According to Hegemann, the unique item has driven 358,000 km today (as of September 2009) and is moved in summer and winter. The engine case has never been opened. The machine is registered in Paris (France).

The DNL company had leftover parts for approx. 50 vehicles and 10 sets of panels and swing arms were placed in the spare parts store at DNL. The whereabouts of the spare parts is unclear. The original sales price of the Chiara was around 25,500 DM. The engine was not changed compared to the production model - Ducati 900SS.

Changes compared to the production model

According to Peter Hegemann, the most important criteria for the change compared to the production model were the brake system and the 28 mm longer swing arm.

The brake system was changed because of the known lack of the series system. This had a very soft pressure point when exposed to stress (heat).

The swing arm has been made 28 mm longer to put more weight on the rear wheel. When downshifting quickly and with a light flywheel, the motorcycle tended to “punch the rear wheel” when entering the bend and the shock absorber was fully extended. Result: the tire loses grip. When accelerating out of the curve, you could accelerate earlier. In addition, the spring strut has become a little softer due to the changed lever.

  • Changed chassis
  • Swing arm made of aluminum tube 28 mm longer by Peter Hegemann
  • The chain became 4 links longer
  • Changed brakes (Spiegler four-piston caliper and 320 mm cast brake discs)
  • Steel braided brake lines
  • Headlight of the Cagiva Mito
  • Cagiva Elefant rear light (number plate lighting)
  • New front fairing (based on Ducati Supermono )
  • Modified rear (based on Ducati 916 )
  • Carbon timing belt cover
  • Carbon cockpit fairing
  • Tall Termignoni exhaust system
  • Hey-Tec rear brake support
