The Ducati 860 GT and Ducati 860 GTS were motorcycles made by the Italian manufacturer Ducati .

history

The successor to the Ducati 750 GT, designed by Giorgio Giugiaro , was presented to the public for the first time at the Milan Motor Show in autumn 1973. To match the angular design of the tank, the side covers of the motor housing have also been redesigned - the so-called round motor has been replaced.

Since left-hand gearshifting had been mandatory in the USA since 1974, Ducati equipped the 860 GT produced from 1975 accordingly. The GT cost 7,000 DM in Germany . The GT was optionally available with an electric starter as the GTE version. In 1976 the 860 GTS was brought onto the market and offered for a price of 8,120 DM. 1977–1979 the Ducati 900 GTS was offered, but it had only 864 cm³ and only in England the ignition from Lucas.

technology

engine

With a bore of 86 mm and a stroke of 74.4 mm, the engine had a constant torque of 7 mkp (68.6 Nm) between 3,000 min −1 and 9,000 min −1 . The camshaft drive of the 90 ° air-cooled two - cylinder four-stroke V-engine was carried out via two vertical shafts , the drive of which was simplified compared to the previous 750 GT . The valve control was carried out conventionally via a camshaft per cylinder head, rocker arm and coil springs; just like the valve clearance adjustment via adjusting screws with lock nuts - not with shims as on the 750 GT .

The bypass oil filter cleaned the oil for the rear cylinder.

The maintenance-free, electronically controlled magneto ignition (contactless thyristor ignition system) came from Ducati Elettronica . The 860 GTS was according to the brochure in Germany a standard Ölbadkettenkasten, electric starter, an iodine lamp and was strained compatible. Two horizontal carburettors (type Dell'Orto PHF 32 AD / AS ) supplied the engine with the mixture.

landing gear

A 38 mm Ceriani telescopic fork guided the front wheel, while Marzocchi struts were installed for the rear suspension . The frame differed significantly from that of the Super Sport models. The chain tension was not adjusted as in the Super Sport versions by moving the rear axle in the swing arm. Instead, the rear axle was immovably clamped in the swing arm, the swing arm axis was mounted in eccentric bushings in the frame, the bushes were held in a clamp. The chain tension was regulated by moving the entire rocker by turning these eccentric bushings. This construction ensures that the rear wheel is always in the correct lane in the swing arm because it is impossible to move the tensioner differently on the sides of the swing arm. The special tools required for this were included with all machines in the tool kit.

Versions

Just one year after the introduction of the GT, the GTS was introduced with a modified tank for better knee grip, a flatter seat and numerous changes to the details.

The ignition lock was placed between the speedometer and tachometer; the choke switch moved next to the speedometer.
