The Ducati 851 is a motorcycle model from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati .

The 851 was the first Ducati with water cooling , two camshafts per cylinder head , four valves per cylinder and manifold injection . It was the first motorcycle to be successful in racing with an intake manifold injection. The model series dominated the superbike racing series in the early 1990s .

The newly designed Desmoquattro engine was unmistakably a Ducati V2 engine: a front and a standing rear cylinder in the direction of travel at an angle of 90 ° ("L-Twin"), valve control with Desmodromic and toothed belt drive for the camshafts.

The 851 was equipped with a newly designed tubular steel lattice frame , open at the bottom , which integrated the engine as a load-bearing part. In the frame, the main frame of which was used in the Ducati Monster until 2002 , there was also a lever for progressive suspension of the rear wheel.

The 851 was built in several versions (S / SP / Strada / Solo / Due). As early as 1991, a limited number of SP versions with 888 cm³ rolled off the production line for homologation for the Superbike World Championship . From 1993 only engines with 888 cm³ were installed and the motorcycle was renamed Ducati 888 accordingly . Early 851 had bench side panels that were pulled down towards the front, later models and the 888 had horizontal side panels.

The Ducati 888 was replaced by the Ducati 916 in 1994 .
