The Ducati Monster is a naked bike model series from the Italian motorcycle manufacturer Ducati , which was introduced in 1992 and went on sale in 1993.

development

During the financial crisis that Ducati found itself in the early 1990s, the Monster was designed inexpensively on a modular basis . The engines came from the Supersport series , the frame and the chassis with small changes from the Superbike series . The design, which was the first to put streetfighter trains on the road in series, came from the pen of Miguel Angel Galluzzi, who was later also responsible for the design of the Cagiva Raptor .

With the M900, the 'Urmonster' was delivered in 1992. The M600 came in 1994, the M750 in 1996 with the engines previously available from the SS. The series was expanded in 1997 with the monochrome black Dark models.

In 2001, the Monster S4 was the first water-cooled four - valve engine, known from the Ducati 916 , in connection with more complex chassis components in the Monster series. The successor model S4R brought a single-sided swing arm from 2004 , still a standard windshield and a wider 180 rear tire.

The Monster S4Rs Testastretta, released in 2006, represents the most powerful variant of the model series with 95 kW / 130 PS until 2013, with the Testastretta engine known from the 998 and 999 .

Also in 2000, the 2-valve engines were converted to manifold injection (i. E.), Also in order to meet new EU emissions regulations, there were now the 750 and M900 ie, with otherwise unchanged frame and equipment. In 2002, the M800 ie with a slightly increased displacement and 54 instead of 47 kW and increased compression of 10.4 instead of 9.0 was presented.

With the M1000, a newly designed 2-valve Desmodue engine was introduced in 2003 , which had an increase in displacement from 904 to 992 cm³, a modified crankshaft drive, different cylinder heads with a steeper valve angle and dual ignition and a compression increase from 9.2 to 10. This increased the output from 57 to 62 kW and the maximum torque from 76 to 84 Nm.

In 2005 came the Monster 800 S2R, with double silencer on the right and the single-sided swing arm of the S4R models, with 57 kW and six-speed gearbox. There was also a new 695 as the successor to the 600, now with manifold injection and an output of 54 kW.

In 2008, after 15 years, a completely newly developed hybrid frame was presented for the first time in 15 years with the Monster 696, which consists of 34 mm steel tubes towards the steering head and an aluminum cast part towards the rear. Other changes to the design included an oval headlight, air intakes in the two-part plastic tank cover and a raised, conically shaped 2-in-2 rear silencer.

This frame was also used in 2009 in the new Monster 1100, which has a displacement of 1,078 cm³ with 95 PS (69.8 kW) and 102.9 Nm torque as well as a single-sided swing arm made of cast light metal. In the 1100 S variant, it has suspension components from Öhlins , lighter rims and various parts made of carbon .

The Monster 796 appeared in the spring of 2010, also with the hybrid frame, now with 87 PS (65 kW).

In autumn 2010 the Monster 1100 Evo was introduced as a replacement for the 1100 and 1100s models. The exhaust pipes are now guided under the engine again, the double underseat exhaust moves to the right-hand side, the dry clutch is replaced by a wet clutch. The output is now 100 HP (73.5 kW) with a compression of 11.3: 1.

Total Monster models with 600 cc (until 2001), 620 cc, 695 cc, 696 cc (from 2006), 750 cc, 800 cc, 900 cc, 916 cc, 992 cc, 996 cc (S4R), 998 cc (S4R Testastretta, S4Rs) and 1,078 cm³.

Since the end of 2013, Ducati has also been using liquid-cooled engines throughout the Monster series. At the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan , the Monster 1200 was presented, which, thanks to the Testastretta engine, achieves an output of 135 hp (99.3 kW) at 8750 rpm. The Monster 1200 S presented shortly thereafter even increased this to 145 hp (106.6 kW) at 8750 rpm. With both models, the electronic “ride-by-wire” throttle control is also found in the Monster , as is a fully digital TFT-based instrument cluster.

As the successor to the Monster 796, the Monster 821 was presented in May 2014, which also uses the liquid-cooled Testastretta engine and has an output of 112 hp (82 kW). As with the Monster 1200, there is a traction control with eight levels and an ABS with three modes on board.

As part of the adaptation to the stricter Euro 4 emissions standard, the Monster 797 was presented at the end of 2016, which uses an air-cooled engine with slightly lower power.

Technical specifications

All Monster models have a 90 ° L-twin engine (V-twin cylinder leaning forward) with desmodromic valve control and (from 2001) petrol injection as well as a 5- or 6-speed gearbox. However, the engines differ in their cubic capacity, the type of cooling and the number of valves. Models with a displacement of 400 cm³ were also produced for the Japanese market.
