The Ducati Monster 1200 is a motorcycle category naked bike of the Italian manufacturer Ducati . It is the third generation of the Ducati Monster series and replaced the air-cooled model generation M5 ( 696 , 796 and 1100/1100 Evo ).

Model history

The Ducati Monster 1200 was presented at the EICMA motorcycle fair in 2013 and was awarded the visitor's prize as the fair's most beautiful motorcycle. The model replaces the M5 series and is based on the liquid-cooled four-valve engine "Testastretta Evoluzione", which was derived from the Ducati 1198 superbike . The changes compared to the previous version are accordingly extensive:

  • New tubular space frame with modified geometry and longer wheelbase
  • Increase in rated power to 135 hp or 145 hp in the S version
  • Ride-by-wire system and three driving modes that can be configured via the TFT display
  • Revised Ducati Safety Pack , consisting of a 3-stage anti-lock braking system and 8-stage Ducati Traction Control
  • new metal tank and no multi-part tank cladding

The original version of the Monster 1200 is called the M6 and was produced from 2014 to 2016. For the entry into force of the Euro 4 standard 2017, the Monster 1200 has been completely redesigned and since then has the type designation MA.

Model variants

In addition to the basic model of the Ducati Monster 1200, there is again an S version, which is primarily characterized by higher-quality chassis and brake components. Since 2016, an R version has been available with further improved equipment and a more racing-oriented orientation (in particular increased power to 160 hp, steering dampers , forged rims, greater freedom from lean angles). For the 2017 model year and in order to meet the Euro 4 standard, the Ducati Monster 1200 and the S version have been fundamentally revised. These include a steeper steering head angle, a shorter rear swing arm, modified engine settings and modified injection systems. The shape of the tank has also been revised and based more closely on the first generation of the Ducati Monster. There were big changes in the area of electronics. So the 2017er generation received a Curve ABS, a wheelie control, an automatic switch (Quick Shifter) with so-called Blipper, the downshift without domes allows (S version as standard, basic model as an option), and a new dashboard and new controls. The R version is produced unchanged and still has the older electronics package of the first generation.

Colours

The Monster 1200 is or was available in the following color designs:

  • Red with red frame (continuous, all versions)
  • White with frame in anthracite (only S version, only year of construction 2015)
  • Diamond Black with black frame (R version only, 2016–2017)
  • Gray with black frame (only S version, from year of construction 2017)

technology

Engine and drive

A Testastretta engine is installed here, following on from the S4R and S4RS models of the first Ducati Monster generation . Originally a development for the Ducati 1198 superbike , the engine was already used in the Multistrada 1200 in a more everyday design. Although the bore and stroke were left the same, the compression was slightly reduced. The torque curve has also been changed so that peak power and maximum torque are achieved earlier. This is achieved, among other things, by reducing the overlap of the valves by 11 degrees. The engine has dual ignition for homogeneous combustion. The standard clutch is still an oil bath clutch with anti-hopping function as standard.

  • Two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 90 ° cylinder angle
  • Bore: 106 mm
  • Stroke: 67.9 mm
  • Total displacement: 1198 cm³
  • Compression ratio: 13: 1
  • Maximum output: 108 kW (147 hp) at 9250 rpm
  • Max. Torque: 124 Nm at 7750 rpm
  • 6 speed transmission
  • Multi-disc oil bath clutch with anti-hopping function
