The Ducati Monster 1100 Evo is a Motorcycle category naked bike of the Italian manufacturer Ducati . It is the last air-cooled model in the Ducati Monster series with a displacement of over one liter.

Model history

The Ducati Monster 1100 Evo was presented at the EICMA motorcycle fair in 2010 . The model is based on the M5 series and thus on the second generation that has been on the market since 2008 with the Monster 696. The main changes to the Ducati Monster 1100 were:

  • Increase in the homologated nominal power to 70 kW (95 PS)
  • Right-hand exhaust system with modified manifold shape
  • Standard Ducati Safety Pack , consisting of an anti-lock braking system and Ducati Traction Control
  • slightly changed seating position due to new seat and higher handlebars

Models

The Monster 1100 Evo was available in the following color designs until 2013:

  • Red with a red frame
  • Diamond Black with frame in anthracite (tank and covers in black with dark gray decorative stripes and black rims)
  • Red with a gold bronze frame for the 20th Anniversary Edition

Unlike the predecessor and successor, the Monster 1100 Evo does not have an "S" model with higher quality components.

Special models

There are two special models of the Monster 1100 Evo. The Ducati Monster Diesel presented in 2012 differs from the basic model in various design elements. The paintwork is matt khaki green, the Brembo brake callipers yellow; the complete exhaust system is black. There are also special covers on the rear silencer and on the cockpit. The seat of the Monster Diesel is covered with real leather and quilted with cross seams. The special model 20th Anniversary Edition was launched in 2013 on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Ducati Monster and is in the style of the first Monster models. It is painted red, has a golden bronze frame and round mirrors.

Motor & drive

The engine of the 1100 Evo is the most powerful Desmodue -V2 to date and differs from its predecessor in many areas. Although the bore and stroke were left the same, the cylinder heads and pistons were redesigned in order to be able to do without the dual ignition and still slightly increase the compression. The motor's flywheel mass was also significantly reduced in order to save weight and the timing was changed. The motor housing has also been revised and made lighter thanks to new production processes. The weight of the alternator and the corresponding cover (now in magnesium) have also been reduced. On the one hand, this increased the maximum performance and saved weight; on the other hand, it was criticized that the drivability would have suffered as a result. The clutch is now an oil bath clutch and no longer a dry clutch. As a result, the rattling characteristic of many Ducati models is not present. However, the manual force for actuation and the wear is lower. An anti-hopping function is standard on the clutch .

  • Two-cylinder four-stroke V-engine, 90 ° cylinder angle
  • Bore: 98 mm
  • Stroke: 71.5 mm
  • Total displacement: 1079 cm³
  • Compression ratio: 11.3: 1
  • Maximum output: 70 kW (95 PS) at 7500 rpm (homologated according to 95/1 / EC)
  • Max. Torque: 105 Nm at 6000 rpm (homologated according to 95/1 / EG)
  • 6 speed transmission
  • Multi-disc oil bath clutch with anti-hopping function

landing gear

The Monster 1100 Evo has a modified chassis. So the fork is now from the supplier Marzocchi and adjustable in compression and rebound as well as spring preload.

Telescopic fork

  • Oil hydraulic Marzocchi -Upside-down fork, fully adjustable
  • Standpipe diameter (stiles) 43 mm.
  • Suspension travel: 130 mm.

Shock absorber

  • Progressively actuated Sachs strut, adjustable in rebound and spring preload.
  • Stroke of the shock absorber: 59.5 mm.
  • Rear wheel travel: 148 mm.

bikes

The 10 Y-spoke alloy wheels are lighter than the 5-spoke wheels on the Monster 1100. In 2012 there was a recall for the 2011 and 2012 model year rear wheel that could potentially break.

Front wheel

  • Dimensions: MT 3.50 × 17 "
  • Tire size: 120/70 ZR 17

Rear wheel

  • Dimensions: MT 5.50 × 17 "
  • Tire size: 180/55 ZR 17

Brakes

The Monster 1100 Evo has a front brake system with two 320 mm discs and Brembo P4.32 four-piston brake calipers and a Brembo P 34 two-piston brake caliper at the rear, which acts on a 245 mm disc. The ABS system , which can be switched off, comes from Bosch and does not work integrally, i.e. the front and rear brakes are operated and controlled separately.

electronics

The electronics of the Monster 1100 Evo are largely identical to those of the M5 generation. The injection system comes from Siemens. Important new feature is the Ducati Traction Control (DTC) called traction control . The system works with the hall sensors of the ABS and monitors the slip of the rear wheel. The system allows the driver to choose four levels of control intensity (level 4 is the most sensitive, level 1 allows the most slip) or to deactivate the system entirely.

reception

The Monster 1100 Evo received mostly positive reviews when it appeared. Among other things, the character of the engine, its sound, the electronic assistance systems and the design were praised. The chassis, in particular, received mixed reviews, on the one hand it was rated as comfortable and on the other hand it was criticized for being basically too soft and not adjustable enough for sporty use. Further points of criticism concern the drivability in city traffic, with the engine running in the low speed range being criticized in particular due to the lower flywheel mass. This fits the criticism compared to the Ducati Monster 696 , which is attested to the better drivability and better handling. The partly simpler equipment of the Monster 696 is not decisive and the driving pleasure is at least equal, if not greater. The seating position and improved comfort through revisions to the handlebars and seat are again positively highlighted.
