The Ducati Multistrada 1200 is a motorcycle from the Italian vehicle manufacturer Ducati . The travel enduro was presented to the press on November 10, 2009 at the international motorcycle fair EICMA in Milan and is manufactured in Borgo Panigale . For the 2015 model year, the Multistrada was slightly modified visually and technically. The engine was developed based on the drive of the Ducati 1198 superbike and is called Testastretta 11 °, the number of degrees indicating the valve overlap . The two cylinders of the V-engine have a cylinder angle of 90 degrees. The four valves per cylinder head are controlled by two overhead camshafts via a desmodromic system. The two cylinders have a bore of 106 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 67.9 mm with a compression ratio of 11.5: 1. With the modification for model year 2015, the engine output increases to 117.7 kW (160 PS) and the torque to 136 Nm. The compression ratio changes to 12.5: 1.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 249 km / h. The four-stroke engine consumes an average of 6.2 liters of fuel per 100 km and has a theoretical range of 323 km.

The power output is completely electronically regulated (ride-by-wire) and includes both a multi-level traction control and a "wheelie control" that prevents the front wheel from getting on when the vehicle is accelerating too quickly. The response behavior of the electronic support can be selected via various "Riding Modes", a selectable programming that is adjustable via handlebar switches. A cruise control system ( cruise control ) is also available.

The chassis is built on a tubular steel frame and has a load-bearing motor-gear unit. The front upside down fork from Marzocchi has a Ø 48 mm stanchion diameter and 170 mm travel. The rear single-sided swing arm made of aluminum has a central spring strut from Sachs with a lever system and 170 mm suspension travel. The “Ducati Skyhook Suspension” (DSS) available in the S model adapts the rebound and compression stage damping of the Sachs spring elements to the road conditions in a response time of 10 milliseconds.

The power is converted by a claw-shifted six-speed gearbox with helical teeth, the power separation by a hydraulically operated multi-plate oil bath clutch. A chain in the secondary drive transfers the torque from the gearbox output to the rear axle. The dry weight with anti-lock braking system is 209 kg, the ready-to-drive weight 232 kg. Braking system

A floating double disc brake with a diameter of 320 mm and a 4-piston radial fixed calliper from Brembo decelerates the front wheel. A single-disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm (previously 245) and a double-piston floating caliper has been working on the rear wheel since 2015. The brake system is supported by a disengageable, partially integrated anti-lock braking system from Bosch (9ME). The further development of ABS has also been available since 2015 and is now also active in curves. The S-model has Ø 330 mm disc brakes on the front wheel. The rim sizes are 3.50 × 17 ″ at the front and 6.00 × 17 ″ at the rear. The tires are 120 / 70ZR17 at the front and 190 / 55ZR17 at the rear.

Fuel supply

The mixture is formed by electronic fuel injection. The ignition is digitally controlled by two transistor-controlled spark plugs per cylinder. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. The fuel tank has a volume of 20 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve.

Electrics

The starter battery has a capacity of 12 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 520 watts. The motorcycle has two sockets with a 12-volt supply. The instrumentation has been implemented entirely as a liquid crystal display since 2015 . In the S version a 5 "color TFT is used. The S model also has LED headlights with cornering lights (standard: halogen headlights).

Exhaust system

The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter with two lambda sensors and falls below the limit values ​​of the EURO4 emission class . The two exhaust manifolds of the 2-1-2 exhaust system open into two aluminum rear silencers on the right-hand side of the vehicle.

Airbag system on the driver

The Multistrada 1200 D-air Street (2014), "the first production motorcycle with an innovative airbag system on the driver", has sensors that wirelessly connect an airbag jacket.

Market positioning

At the time of its market launch, the Multistrada was the most powerful motorcycle in the travel enduro class. With the introduction of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure with 117.7 kW (160 PS), Ducati lost this status. With the 2015 modification, Ducati at least shares this title again.

With the chassis geometry of a touring enduro, a superbike drive and wide road tires, the Multistrada cannot be clearly assigned to any vehicle category.
