The KTM 1290 Super Adventure [ ˈsu: pəʳ ədˈventʃəʳ ] is a motorcycle from the Austrian vehicle manufacturer KTM . The travel enduro was presented to the press on September 30, 2014 at the Intermot in Cologne and will be final assembled in Mattighofen . KTM markets the motorcycle as a “luxury travel enduro”.

technology

drive

The motorcycle is powered by a liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine with a capacity of 1301 cm³. The LC8 is already used in a modified form in the KTM 1290 Super Duke R naked bike . The cylinder bank angle between the two cylinders of the V-engine is 75 °. The four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 118 kW (160 HP) at a speed of 8750 / min and a maximum torque of 141 Nm at 6750 / min. The four valves per cylinder head are of two overhead, gear-driven camshaft over with amorphous carbon (engl. Diamond-like coating (DLC) ) coated rocker arms driven. The two cylinders have a bore of 108 mm diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 71 mm with a compression ratio of 13.1: 1. A water pump permanently supplies the engine with coolant, while three rotor pumps ensure pressure circulation lubrication .

Compared to the engine of the Super Duke, the centrifugal mass of the crankshaft has been increased by two kilograms and the inlet and outlet ports of the cylinder heads have been revised. In addition, the engine mapping was changed, the throttle valve diameter was reduced to 52 mm, the rated output was reduced from 127 to 118 kW and the torque in the medium speed range increased. The hydraulically operated multi-plate anti-hopping clutch runs in an oil bath. The claw-shift transmission has six gears and the secondary drive works with an X-ring chain. The primary drive was supplemented by a shock absorber and the sixth gear was longer.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 260 km / h. The brake system decelerates the motorcycle from 100 to 0 km / h with an average of 8.9 m / s². From this speed it comes to a stop after 43.4 meters.

Frame and chassis

The frame adopted from the KTM 1190 Adventure , a lattice frame , consists of powder-coated chrome-molybdenum oval steel tubes and weighs 9.8 kg. The screwed-on rear frame consists of square tubes made of aluminum. With a flat steering head angle, long wheelbase and caster , the chassis geometry is designed to be stable. The rear wheel is guided by a two-arm swing arm made of aluminum, the front wheel by an upside-down telescopic fork .

A double disc brake with a diameter of 320 mm from Brembo with fixed brake calipers and floating brake discs decelerates on the front wheel, and a disc brake with two-piston fixed caliper on the rear. The braking system is supported by a three-stage traction control ( motorcycle traction control, MTC ) and a switchable, combined dual-circuit anti-lock braking system (C-ABS) from Bosch .

The KTM 1290 Super Adventure is equipped with a Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) , an electronic stability control from Robert Bosch GmbH that regulates both the anti-lock braking system and the traction control. In addition, the Super Adventure has a semi-active chassis, which automatically adjusts to changing driving situations according to a preselectable mode. Their suspension control unit (SCU) has sensors on suspension travel sensors and accelerometers at the front and rear. The maximum payload is 208 kg, the gross vehicle weight is 460 kg.

Electrical system

The throttle commands are electronically converted into the corresponding throttle valve position by an electric ride-by-wire system from the Engine Management System (EMS) depending on various performance mappings (Street, Sport, Rain, Off-Road) . A starter battery with a capacity of 11.2 ampere hours supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 450 watts, which, in addition to the ignition system and on-board electronics, also supplies the LED headlights with daytime running lights , the rear lights and the direction indicators.

Fuel supply

The mixture creates an electronically controlled fuel injection. Two different sized spark plugs per cylinder ignite the fuel mixture. The average fuel consumption is 6.3 l per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The unbreakable plastic fuel tank has a volume of 30 liters and enables a theoretical range of 476 km on country roads. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane . E-10 fuel can be filled.

Exhaust system

Thanks to the regulated catalytic converter with a secondary air system for exhaust aftertreatment , the motorcycle falls below the limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard . The two exhaust manifolds open into a stainless steel rear silencer on the right side of the vehicle.

Commute

Ralf Schneider criticizes a conceptual tendency to pendulum in the trade journal Motorrad : “Even at a slower speed, you can feel that the Super Adventure is a ticklish motorcycle in terms of aerodynamics, which can easily provoke the steering to stir when the gusts of wind from crosswinds or the turbulent winds of the cars ahead leaves. With empty suitcases, it starts to commute beyond 200 and when fully packed it even starts at around 170 km / h. ”He also criticizes the fork's damping control, which only responds hesitantly to small bumps:“ It causes constant bumps in bumps The front section bounces slightly, which can even increase to a real shimmy with light riders . "Alan Klee reports in the" Tourenfahrer " magazine about a" self-reinforcing rocking, which depending on road, wind and load conditions between 160 and 200 km / h occurs "and can lead to" uncontrolled beating of the handlebar ". In the operating instructions for the Adventure series, KTM warns of "unstable handling at high speed". With a usage restriction, the manufacturer has limited the maximum speed for journeys with side cases to 150 km / h. KTM reacted to the critical reporting by withdrawing advertising orders and test vehicles.

Reviews

“The KTM 1290 Super Adventure is not really the perfect travel enduro either. But she is definitely the one who most consistently attacks, and even questions, the previously undisputed claim of BMW to set the tone in this segment. "

- Ulf Böhringer : The world

“If you ignore the lack of sensitivity and mechanical noises that the fork brings to light, you can drive a hot tire with the KTM on the country road. With its torsion-resistant frame and the sometimes stubbornly stiffened spring elements, the 1290 has to be brought into an inclined position with noticeable effort, but it keeps very precisely on track in oncoming road conditions. "

- Alan Klee : Tour driver

"Ride Mode, Traction Control, Motor Slip Regulation, Stability Control, Electronic Anti Dive, Anti Squad, Cruise Control, Hill Hold Control, LED Cornering Light, Tire Pressure Control, Demobilizer ... even if this comparison with the moon flight is not so good but say with certainty that the pilot of the new KTM 1290 Super Adventure has more computer power available than the astronauts of the Apollo missions. Electronic and mechatronic systems make modern vehicles safer and more efficient - but also more complex. "

- Michael Kutschke : Motorbike

“KTM promises a motorcycle over which the rider has total control. The fact is, however: He sits on a travel rocket and, at best, controls the inspectors, who pay a wolf to protect him from himself. "

- Uli Böckmann : Touring driver
