Model history and technical data

The machine has a single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 690 cm³ and an output of 49 kW (67 hp). It was on offer from 2012 to 2017. Although the machine was the Group's best-selling in Germany in 2015 and 2016, it was withdrawn from the range in 2017. Remaining copies were sold in 2017. At the end of 2018, KTM announced the resumption of production and will sell the SMC-R again from 2019, then with the revised single-cylinder engine with 75 hp.

Due to its low weight - when it was first sold it was only 139 kg dry weight - paired with high performance and an anti-hopping clutch, it is considered an extreme athlete among the supermoto with road approval. It has very sharp Brembo brakes . In order to underline its sporty character, it came into the salesrooms without ABS until the 2014 model year . The steering head angle of 63.0 ° with a caster of 112 mm also contributed to the athlete's image. Typical was the format of the tubeless wire spoke wheels with 17 inches of the dimensions 120/70 ZR 17 (front) and 160/60 ZR 17 (rear). What was noticeable was the very high arrangement of the seat, which was also one of the few points of criticism in the trade press. The KTM 690 SMC-R has a tubular space frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel, in which the engine acts as a load-bearing element. The front suspension is provided by an upside-down telescopic fork from the manufacturer WP . At the rear, a strut from the same manufacturer takes on this task by means of a deflection .
