The KTM 950 Adventure [ ədˈventʃəʳ ] is a motorcycle from the Austrian vehicle manufacturer KTM . The travel enduro was presented to the press on September 18, 2002 at the Intermot in Munich , manufactured in Mattighofen from 2003 to 2005 and replaced by the KTM 990 Adventure in 2006 .

history

The story of the KTM 950 Adventure began in 1992 when two engineering students combined a newly developed crankcase with two single-cylinder engines from the KTM LC4. This V-engine was assembled in a prototype and exhibited at the IFMA in Cologne under the name "Bepono".

Four years later, KTM commissioned the Stuttgart development office “Kraft Technik” to work out a design for a hard enduro with a V-engine . The RSV900 V-motor with a 60 degree cylinder angle developed by Rotax for Aprilia should preferably be used. However, the Italian two-wheeler manufacturer refused to pass the engine on to KTM. The alternative possible 60 ° V engine from the Swedish company Folan suffered from excessive vibrations due to the lack of a balancer shaft.

After KTM had recovered economically at the beginning of 1998, the expansion of the model range to include V engines was given new priority. Chief developer Wolfgang Felber made preliminary studies for two-cylinder engines and vehicle concepts.

In August 1998 the decision was made in favor of an in-house development of a light, compact V-engine with a 75 degree cylinder angle. Claus Holweg was poached from the Austrian engine manufacturer Rotax as project manager. The new drive with the name LC8 was developed after twelve months and had its first static test on August 11, 1999.

prototype

The Upper Austrian-based design company KISKA produced a design prototype and presented it on September 13, 2000 at the Munich Intermot. After criticizing the design, Stefan Pierer , the managing director of KTM-Sportmotocycle GmbH, decided to largely discard the design. KTM developers then created a pioneering design for KTM with clear, angular cladding.

A version of the 950 Adventure that was almost ready for series production was then presented in 2002 at the Intermot on the grounds of the New Munich Trade Fair Center . The serial production of the LC8 began in February of 2003.

The KTM 950 Adventure was the first KTM motorcycle with a two-cylinder engine .

technology

drive

It is driven by a liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine with a displacement of 942 cm³, known as the LC8 . The cylinder bank angle between the two cylinders of the 58 kg V-engine is 75 °.

LC8 engine

The four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 76 kW (103 hp) and a maximum torque of 97 Nm. The two cylinders have a bore of 100 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 60 mm with a compression ratio of 11.5: 1. The two inlet and two outlet valves per cylinder head are controlled by two overhead, chain-driven camshafts . A multifunctional shaft serves as a mass balance , a centrifuge for housing ventilation, a water pump and timing chain drive and carries the starter idler gear.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 215 km / h.

landing gear

The chassis is built on a self-supporting lattice frame made of steel tubes with a screwed-on light metal rear and has a two-arm swing arm made of aluminum at the rear and an upside-down telescopic fork with a Ø 48 mm tube diameter at the front . The power is converted by a claw-shifted six-speed gearbox, the power separation by a multi-disc clutch in an oil bath and the secondary drive by an O-ring chain . The clutch is operated hydraulically.

A Brembo double disc brake with floating brake calipers decelerates on the front tire, and a disc brake on the rear. A disengageable dual-circuit anti-lock braking system from Bosch supports the braking system.

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 14 Ah and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 450 watts.

Fuel supply

The two-part fuel tank has a volume of 22 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The mixture is formed by two Ø 43 mm constant pressure carburettors from Keihin. The manufacturer recommends using unleaded petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane .

Exhaust system

The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by an uncontrolled catalytic converter with a secondary air system and falls below the limit values of the EURO2 emissions standard . The two exhaust manifolds each lead into a stainless steel rear silencer.

Reviews

“The tire dimensions - 21 inches at the front and 18 inches at the rear - as well as the wide limit range of the Pirelli Scorpion can handle any nonsense and let the pilot with the 950 either describe razor-sharp lines or slide completely across the bend, preferably on winding little streets of the last order, from which the spring elements can not be disturbed a bit. "

- Jörn Thomas : Motorbike

“A slim silhouette, a fully off-road chassis and a significantly reduced weight compared to all other travel enduros should bring the riders of the new KTM 950 Adventure the greatest driving pleasure on and off the asphalt. However, the 950 was not that light after all: 224 kilograms with a full 22 liter tank are only around 14 kilograms less than in the case of the Suzuki V-Strom, the lightest machine in this category to date. "

“The suspension is very good and with a spring travel of 265 mm at the front and 260 mm at the rear, it is more than adequate. Here the low weight and the low center of gravity pay off and with 316 mm ground clearance you also have enough space for underrun protection. "
