KTM 690 Enduro R

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The KTM 690 Enduro / Enduro-R is a motorcycle from the manufacturer KTM AG .

description

Enduro R built in 2011

The KTM 690 Enduro-R is the successor to the KTM 640 LC4 Enduro and has been in production since 2008. It is used in the field and on the road. With this, KTM is making a compromise between suitability for everyday use and use in motorsport. The Enduro-R is based more on the EXC models and, unlike the normal Enduro, has coarse tires ex works. The 63 HP engine was used until 2011. From 2012 the KTM 690 Enduro and the KTM 690 Enduro R were combined in just one version. The displacement grew, the power increased to 67PS and the suspension travel was reduced. From 2014 the KTM 690 Enduro R got the engine with double ignition and the brake system an ABS system that can be switched off . In 2016 production was temporarily stopped due to the Euro 4/5 problem. In 2019 the KTM 690 Enduro R with the 74 HP engine, additional balancer shaft, Euro 4 compliant and with a new design was presented.

The Enduro-R is equipped with a 4-stroke single cylinder engine. Depending on the year of construction, this has an output of up to 49 kW and delivers a torque of 68 Nm with a compression of 12.5: 1. The engine has a water cooling system to meet the requirements of the high heat generation. The engine is equipped with a 12 V electric starter as standard.

The drive consists of an anti-hopping clutch and a 6-speed claw gear. Power is transmitted to the rear wheel via an X-ring chain.

The frame is a tubular space frame to save weight. Many add-on parts are made of special plastic that is highly stable but still flexible. As a result, it does not break in the event of a fall, but still protects underlying components. A special feature of the design is the rear tank, which holds 12.5 l of premium gasoline. Its installation position improves the center of gravity of the motorcycle, which improves handling. The tank is also made of plastic. Ready to drive, the motorcycle weighs around 138 kg.

The Enduro R is delivered from the factory with footrests for pillion rides. KTM provides a conversion kit for single use.

LC4 engine

mechanics

The engine is a single-cylinder four-stroke gasoline engine with 690 cm³ displacement. This results from a bore of 102 mm and a stroke of 84.5 mm (model year 2017). Depending on the year of construction, an output of 46 kW up to 49 kW (63 - 67 PS) at around 7500 rpm is specified. The maximum torque is 68 Nm at 6000 rpm. The compression ratio is 12.5: 1. The four valves are operated by rocker arms from an overhead camshaft (OHC). The camshaft is driven by a hydraulically tensioned timing chain. To make the engine run more smoothly, it also has a balance shaft.

The engine has dry sump lubrication with two oil pumps.

Engine management

Fuel supply

Throttle body when installed

The fuel is supplied via an electronic fuel injection. The mixture formation takes place in the throttle valve body before the engine. The throttle valve body has a servomotor which synchronously adjusts the angle of the throttle valve to the position of the throttle grip. The control takes place via a drive-by-wire system (from year of construction 2012), until then the throttle valve was adjusted using a cable. The driver can choose between several engine maps, which he can select manually using a switch under the seat bench. The driver can reduce the driving performance, weaken the response behavior or call up the maximum power of the engine as required. In addition, the injection system regulates the engine during cold starts in order to reduce exhaust emissions.

Ignition system

The mixture is ignited by a 12 V ignition system. With newer models already with a double ignition , this optimizes the combustion and thereby reduces the fuel consumption. The disadvantage lies in the additional electrical system and thus the higher weight and the increased susceptibility to failure.

Cooling system

The motor is water-cooled and also has a 12 volt electric fan. This is particularly important in city traffic to prevent the engine from overheating. The expansion tank is located below the ignition lock behind the fork.

Innovations for the KTM 640 LC4

Since the start of production in 2008, the 690 Enduro has been continuously developed. The centerpiece is the LC4 engine, which has been gradually increased over the years from 640 cm³ to 690 cm³. The carburetor has been replaced with an injection system to meet current emissions standards. The standard installation of an anti-lock braking system is also required by law on the 690 Enduro; However, up to the current legislation, most of the models were manufactured without ABS, as this can lead to disadvantages off-road. However, KTM offers the owners of the ABS variants the option of switching off the ABS manually so that they can ride unrestricted off-road. This is done using a selector switch on the motorcycle. Switching off is not permitted in traffic.
