The KTM 1190 RC8 is a motorcycle from the Austrian manufacturer KTM . It is the company's first super sports car .

history

KTM RC8 prototype

Due to the expansion in the area of on-road motorcycles (Adventure models, Super Duke ) by KTM, the next logical step was a motorcycle in the super sports class. The first public presentation of a prototype took place at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2003. The design, which also comes from the Salzburg company KISKA in the case of the RC8 , was only slightly changed as part of the series testing, but according to KTM hardly any part of the study was adopted unchanged in the series model. The first customer vehicles were delivered in 2008. The first two available color variants are orange / black and white / black. For the 2009 model year, KTM brought the more racing-oriented, more powerful version 1190 RC8 R onto the market.

technology

The engine of the RC8 is not based on the well-known LC8-V2 engine, but has been designed from scratch. Not least because of the increase in displacement in the rival Ducati 1098 , which set new records for the two-cylinder super sports cars with 119 kW (160 PS) and 123 Nm, the displacement was increased from 999 cm³ to 1148 cm³. The mixture preparation is done by a Keihin EMS injection system with 52 mm throttle valves. The exhaust system is worth mentioning, the silencer of which, like the Buell models, is attached directly below the engine, which serves to centralize the mass and thus facilitate handling. The maximum output of the RC8 engine is 114 kW (155 PS), the maximum torque is specified by KTM with 120 Nm. The tubular space frame weighs only 7.4 kg due to a structurally rigid and load-bearing motor housing and consists of eleven steel tubes .

1190 RC8 R

The RC8 R differs from the standard model in various details:

engine

The cylinder bore, which has been enlarged by 2.0 to 105 mm, has a displacement of 1195 cm³. The compression ratio has been increased to 13.5: 1 with the new pistons, and lighter connecting rods are also used. The camshafts used allow longer valve opening times and can be adjusted thanks to the elongated holes in the camshaft gears. Taking into account the higher performance, KTM uses a larger radiator and 10% harder clutch springs for the RC8 R. The front manifold is equipped with insulation to reduce heat radiation. The rated output is homologated with 125 kW (170 PS) at 10,250 rpm, the maximum torque is 123 Nm at 8,000 rpm.

Chassis / brakes

The chassis has also been revised, including softer springs (95 instead of 110  N / mm spring rate). The caster has been increased to 97 mm for better high-speed stability through a smaller offset of the triple clamps , the upper triple clamp is milled and not cast. Lighter, forged Marchesini wheels are used to reduce the unsprung and rotating masses . The sliding tubes of the upside-down fork and the piston rod of the high-quality suspension strut are provided with a friction-reducing titanium - aluminum nitride coating, the spring travel is 120 mm at the front and rear. The eccentric for adjusting the height of the rear frame has an adjustment range that is twice as large as that of the basic model; the front brake discs are now with 5.0 mm 0.5 mm thick and are made of a different steel - alloy .

Others

The RC8 R is 6 kg lighter than the standard version due to various lightweight components, the empty weight with a full tank is approx. 195 kg.

Racing

With the 1190 RC8 R , KTM has been competing in the IDM Superbike class since 2009 .
