KTM Duke

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

KTM Duke is a motorcycle from the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM .

The single-cylinder Duke was built from 1994 to 1999, the Duke II from 1999 to 2006. Both models together were sold a total of 12,550 times. The successor to the Duke II , the 690 Duke (unofficially Duke III) , came onto the market in spring 2008. With the 2012 model year (Duke IV), the style was changed significantly in the direction of “naked bikes” in order to appeal to a broader group of buyers. The Duke 690 also got the revised engine (double ignition, "ride-by-wire" system) of the previous Duke 690 R as well as an anti-lock braking system (ABS).

The KTM Super Duke , equipped with a V2 engine , was launched in 2005. Since 2011, the KTM 125 Duke and KTM 390 Duke have been adding to the Duke series.

Duke

KTM 620 Duke

KTM designed the Duke because of the supermoto wave that was emerging at the time and built it to over 80 percent from existing series parts from the off-road models.

The Duke was initially offered with two different engine versions - the 609 cm³ LC4 engine (referred to as 620 ) and in a small series with the 400 cm³ LC4 engine. The "First Edition" consisted of a total of 500 machines, 450 of which were in the 620 and 50 in the 400 version. They were only available in orange.

The 1995 model year received some modifications such as the Bowden cable-controlled automatic decompression system and was only available in black.

A further revised version followed in 1996. The engine was modified; it received a new engine housing, two oil pumps, a digital ignition and an electric starter. The color of this model year was yellow.

In 1997, stricter exhaust gas regulations made an unregulated catalytic converter and a secondary air system necessary. Black was available as a color.

1998 was the last year of the first Duke model range. Again a limited edition of 400 pieces was built. It had a revised engine, similar to that of the successor model Duke II. The displacement was increased to 625 cm³ by a new crankshaft with 2 mm more stroke. The color of this model year was again orange.

At the Indian KTM partner Bajaj Auto in Pune, the 125cc, 2012 the 200 and 2013 the 390 Duke single-cylinder under KTM control have been manufactured since 2011, these were designed in 2007 in Mattighofen.

640 Duke II

KTM 640 Duke II

In 1999 a completely revised successor to the Duke was presented, the 640 Duke II with a distinctive headlight mask. The single-cylinder engine is the 625 cm³ LC4, which has been used since 1998, but now has a double-end silencer system and a new constant pressure carburetor with higher output at all speeds. There were lighter cast wheels on the chassis. Some of the motorcycles were again built in limited editions, depending on the color.

The colors of the Duke II

  • 1999 "Titan", "Lime Green" (limited to 555 pieces)
  • 2000 "Titan", "Lime Green", "Orpheus Black" (limited to 500 pieces)
  • 2001 "Lime Green", "Chilli Red" (limited to 999 pieces)
  • 2002 "Arctic White", "Adrenalin Orange", "Black"
  • 2003 "Black Silver", "Adrenalin Orange"
  • 2004 "Black", "Yellow"
  • 2005 "Black", "Red"
  • 2006/2007 Duke II Last Edition in "Orange"

Up to 2003 there was practically no facelift, the only changes were limited to new colors.

In 2003 the Duke II was revised again. The engine was modified and got a modified engine housing and a flow-optimized "high-flow" cylinder head (recognizable by the gray color), which among other things had larger exhaust valves. In addition, a hydraulically operated clutch and a floating front brake disc were added, the wheels were no longer supplied by BBS , but by Brembo, which also changed the front brake disc mount.

In 2004 some changes were made again. Even stricter exhaust gas regulations made a secondary air system necessary. There was a new upside-down fork and a new clutch basket.

In 2006 the production of the Duke II was stopped. Sales continued until 2007. The only available color was "orange" with orange wheels (picture).

690 Duke

KTM 690 Duke III

The 690 Duke , also called "Duke III" , was presented at the end of September 2007 and sold from spring 2008.

The motorcycle has the tubular frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel (weight just over 9 kg) and the die-cast aluminum swing arm, which is already used in the 690 Supermoto model . The chassis consists of a fully adjustable 48 mm upside-down fork at the front and an also adjustable central spring strut at the rear and offers 140 mm of spring travel. Both components come from the KTM subsidiary WP Suspensions .

The front brake is a radially screwed four-piston fixed calliper brake with four individual Brembo pads and a floating brake disc with a diameter of 320 mm. The rear of the 690 Duke has a single-piston floating caliper brake (also from Brembo) with a 240 mm brake disc.

A striking feature of the 690 Duke is the under-engine silencer made of stainless steel, which offers advantages in terms of the concentration of the masses around the center of gravity of the vehicle and thus improves handling.

KTM 690 Duke III

The completely new LC4 engine with a displacement of 654 cm³ has an electronic Keihin EMS - intake manifold injection with a 46 mm throttle valve, which is controlled electronically (in addition to manual operation by the throttle grip). The engine in the 690 Duke has a maximum output of 48 kW (65 hp) and a maximum torque of 67 Nm. A regulated catalytic converter takes care of the exhaust gas cleaning . Using a rotary switch on the side of the frame, it is possible to select three different mappings:

1. Soft : reduced power for better drivability, low load change reactions
2. Sport : here the servomotor of the throttle valve is switched practically linearly with the throttle position and thus offers a more aggressive, more direct power development, but with strong load change reactions.
3. Standard : normal engine management with normal load change reactions and balanced response behavior

A hydraulically operated multi-plate oil bath anti-hopping clutch , a claw -shift 6-speed gearbox and an X-ring chain transfer the power from the engine to the rear wheel.

The first two color options are orange / black and white / black.

The 690 Duke R was also offered as a sportier variant with a displacement of 690 cm³ from the 2010 model year. The stroke was lengthened with the same bore. The rated output of the engine is 51.5 kW (70 hp) at 7500 rpm, the maximum torque 70 Nm. The frame is orange, the plastic parts are black / white / orange.

690 Duke 2012

KTM Duke 690 (2018)

The Duke IV (ABS) appeared in early 2012 and has the most powerful single-cylinder engine (70 hp, dual ignition, drive-by-wire ) that has ever been used in series motorcycle production. The fork and shock absorber are no longer adjustable and the fork tube diameter has been reduced from 48 to 43 mm. It is no longer equipped with the under-engine muffler, but has a rear muffler made of stainless steel that slopes upwards. The connecting rod bearing is coated with amorphous carbon , so the inspection intervals could be increased from 7,500 to 10,000 km. The seat height has been reduced by 3 cm. Compared to the I-III models, the new design is more conservative and can now be clearly assigned to the “Naked Bike” segment. The detail processing is no longer quite as high-quality as the previous model (simpler handlebar fittings, side stands, etc.), but the new model is offered much cheaper.

690 Duke / Duke R 2013

KTM underlined the increasing trend of motorcycle manufacturers at this time, namely to add an upgraded variant to a "basic" model, with the Duke 690 R from 2013 onwards. The spring elements of the "R" are fully adjustable and have 15 mm more travel than those of the base model. The silencer comes from the manufacturer Akrapovic and the frame is supplemented by an engine / radiator protection bar, which is integrated into the frame design. The output of the base model is now given as 50 kW (68 PS), while the "R" retains the 51.5 kW of the previous year's model. Other higher quality elements such as the seat, fork bridge and partially deactivatable ABS are additional differences.
