The 990 Super Duke was KTM's first naked bike with two cylinders. In 2002 the Super Duke was presented to the public for the first time at the Intermot . Style-defining elements were the 9 kg tubular space frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel and the angular attachments. A short time later it became known that the Super Duke was not powered by the 942 cm³ LC8 engine of the Adventure travel enduro , but by a new 999 cm³ version with intake manifold injection and 88 kW (120 hp). Various stages of expansion have since been presented at exhibitions and trade fairs until it finally went on sale as the 990 Super Duke in 2005.

Model development

For the 2007 model year, the 990 Super Duke underwent a major facelift for the first time. It received some subtle visual changes (lamp mask, front fender, speedometer unit), a larger tank (plus 3.5 l to 18.5 l), radially screwed Brembo brake calipers at the front and a new engine management system that meets the EURO3 standard and many times over criticized, high consumption decreased. Furthermore, the chassis geometry has been changed slightly in favor of more stability.

The 990 Super Duke R was added to the range as an additional variant . This is an even sportier, single-seater version that differs from the basic model in terms of its equipment. The 48 mm sliding tubes of the upside-down telescopic fork from KTM subsidiary WP Suspension are titanium nitride- coated and an adjustable steering damper is designed to prevent the handlebar from slapping. The steering head angle and caster have been changed in the R version to make handling easier.

In the 2008 model year, the engine of the Super Duke R was revised so that the rated output rose to 97 kW (132 hp). Among other things, the inlet valves, camshafts and the throttle valves have been changed, and an exhaust manifold from Akrapovic is also fitted as standard .

For 2012 the standard variant and the Super Duke R were combined; there was only the Super Duke R with an engine output of 92 kW (125 hp). The chassis has been adapted from the Super Duke R adopted. The model was only available with two seats and in one color.

Based on the concept vehicle The Beast , which was presented at the EICMA in Milan at the end of 2012 , KTM presented further details on the successor model of the 990 R in the course of 2013 , including the significantly larger displacement. In October 2013 the Super Duke 1290 R was officially presented. The basic features of the revised V2 engine with a displacement of 1301 cm³, known in the main from the RC8, initially had a maximum output of 127 kW (173 hp) and a maximum torque of 144 Nm. The power is transferred to the rear wheel via a single swing arm via an X-ring chain. A multi-adjustable traction control helps. The chassis is adjustable in preload, rebound and compression, the brakes have an ABS . All driver assistance systems can be switched off in stages. The empty weight without fuel is 189 kg and thus only slightly more than the Superduke 990 R .

1290 Super Duke GT

For the 2016 model year, KTM introduced a variant of the 1290 R, the Super Duke GT. This is equipped with an extended and reinforced rear frame to make the passenger seat larger and more comfortable. In addition, a windshield was mounted on the lamp cover and the motorcycle was equipped with removable side pockets as standard. A larger tank (23 l) as well as adjustable handlebar and footrest positions increase the usability of the Super Duke for longer touring trips.

Electronic assistance systems such as ABS cornering, cruise control, hill start assist and chassis adjustment are installed as standard.
