Previous model KTM 950 Supermoto

The KTM 990 Supermoto [ ˈsu: pəʳ ˈmo: to ] is a motorcycle from the Austrian vehicle manufacturer KTM . The Supermoto was introduced in 2008 as the successor to the 950 Supermoto and manufactured in Mattighofen until 2013 .

construction

development

Compared to the previous model, the 950 SM, harder fork springs were installed, the steering head angle was set even steeper to 65.1 ° and the frame, which weighs just 9.8 kilograms, was stiffened.

drive

It is driven by a liquid-cooled two - cylinder engine with a displacement of 1000 cm³, known as LC8 (for liquid cooled , 8 valves) . Between the two cylinders of the V-type engine which is cylinder bank angle 75 degrees. The four-stroke engine generates a nominal output of 85 kW (116 hp) and a maximum torque of 97 Nm. The four valves per cylinder head are controlled by bucket tappets from two overhead, chain-driven camshafts . A Keihin injection system pumps the fuel into the combustion chamber . The engine oil for engine lubrication is returned to the oil tank via a dry sump.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km / h.

landing gear

The chassis is built on a powder-coated, self-supporting lattice frame made of chrome-molybdenum steel tubes with a screw-on rear made of light metal. The rear wheel is guided by a two-arm swing arm made of aluminum, the front tire by an upside-down telescopic fork . A hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch in an oil bath separates the engine from the six-speed gearbox. In the secondary drive , an O-ring chain connects the transmission output with the rear axle. The trail is 110 mm.

The brake discs are floating on the front wheel, the brake caliper is floating on the rear wheel.

A floating double disc brake from Brembo decelerates on the front tire . On the rear wheel, a double piston in a floating caliper engages a disc brake with a diameter of 240 mm. A disengageable dual-circuit anti-lock braking system from Bosch supports the braking system. The brakes decelerate from 100 to 0 km / h with an average of 9.6 m / s² over a braking distance of 40.2 m.

Electrics

The engine is started by an electric starter , the starter battery of which has a capacity of 11 ampere hours. The alternator generates an electrical output of 450 watts.

Exhaust system

The exhaust gas aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated catalytic converter with a secondary air system and complies with emission class EURO3 . The two exhaust manifolds each open into a stainless steel rear silencer.

Supermoto T

The special model T (for Travel ) has a lower bench, standard retaining lugs for luggage bags, reduced spring travel and a frame-mounted front panel. The motorcycle was offered in the color combinations black / orange and black / silver.

Reviews

“No question about it, KTM knows how to build chassis. Smooth road holding, excellent suspension with large damping reserves and excellent handiness make you the undisputed boss in the ring. "

- Peter Mayer : Motorbike

"The SM perfectly presents the minimalism that springs from the spirit of one of the most successful enduro forges: an extremely tight waist and a V2 power plant that does without any optical frills and is very narrow in the tight cage of the tubular mesh."

- Guido Saliger : Touring driver

“The 990 Supermoto R is a souped-up relic from the old gas sick days: a hyper-agile supermoto with an LC8-V2, 116 horses, 208 kilos full of fuel, roaring loudly, thirsty like Charlie Sheen and in a dashing battle suit. […] We quickly tick off the journey to the cornering paradise by motorway - sitting upright and without a hint of wind protection, the frenzy is only five minutes of fun. Luggage and passenger can be left at home because of the red-hot end pots. "
