Triple clamp
A fork bridge is a part of motorcycle forks as well as bicycle forks . It connects the two fork legs, between which the front wheel is attached, with the fork shaft, which is rotatably mounted in the steering head bearing.
In classic unsprung bicycle forks, the fork bridge is a piece of forged steel that holds the fork tubes. On cheap bikes, the fork head is made of pressed sheet steel.
Motorcycles and some mountain bikes are not only equipped with a fork bridge under the steering head bearing, but also with a second upper fork bridge and longer fork legs. This increases the rigidity , but results in a higher weight.
On many classic motorcycles, the upper triple clamp is formed by a so-called casquette . In contrast to a so-called lamp mask on a modern motorcycle, this is a load-bearing component.
During assembly, especially if the vehicle concerned has to withstand extreme loads, it is very important to tighten the clamping screws in the correct order, as otherwise strong tensions can occur within the fork bridge, which can tear it under load.
