The BMW S 1000 XR is a motorcycle made by Bayerische Motoren Werke . The all-rounder was presented on November 4, 2014 at the EICMA two-wheeler fair in Milan .

The partially faired motorcycle is technically based on the BMW S 1000 R and is marketed by the manufacturer as an "Adventure Sport Bike". After the fully disguised super sports car BMW S 1000 RR and BMW HP4 and the roadster S 1000 R, the XR is already the fourth variant with the four-cylinder in-line engine and, like all models in the S series, is finally assembled at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . Production there started on April 1, 2015, and sales started on June 13, 2015.

The motorcycle is powered by a transversely mounted in- line engine. The four-cylinder engine with two overhead camshafts and a capacity of 999 cc has a bore of 80 mm, a stroke of 49.7 mm and a compression ratio of 12.0: 1. The two inlet and two exhaust valves of the water- and oil-cooled four-stroke engine are Operated by a carbon- coated rocker arm. The crankshaft has the usual crank pin offset of 180 degrees. The engine delivers 118 kW (160 hp) at 11,000 min -1 , the maximum torque of 112 Nm at a speed of 9250 min -1 achieved.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 250 km / h.

Power transmission

In the primary drive from the engine to the mechanically operated anti-hopping clutch , the power is transmitted via gears. In the secondary drive, an O-ring chain drives the rear wheel. The straight-tooth gearbox with dog clutch has six gears. A shift assistant is optionally available, which uses a sensor on the shift linkage to interrupt the ignition for a few milliseconds, thus enabling load-free shifting without a clutch.

Mechatronics

The engine management system designated BMS-X has a cylinder- selective knock control . The computer systems of Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA), anti-lock braking system (ABS) and Automatic Stability Control (ASC) are networked with one another via a CAN bus . An Electronic Power Control converts the throttle commands electronically into the corresponding throttle position . The starter battery has a capacity of 8 ampere hours and supplies the electric starter . The alternator has a nominal electrical output of 350 watts.

Fuel supply

The fuel tank holds 20 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. BMW gives the average fuel consumption of 5.8 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 95  octane . The fuel-air mixture is formed by an electronically controlled, fully sequential and cylinder-selective intake manifold injection with two injection nozzles per cylinder.

The chassis is based on an aluminum bridge frame and has a two-arm swing arm made of cast aluminum with an indirectly hinged mono spring strut. The bridge frame is made up of the four welded segments of the steering head, motor and swing arm mounts and the two side profiles. Compared to the Roadster, the steering head angle has been designed to be 0.8 degrees flatter, which increases the caster by 18.5 mm. The rear swing arm and the wheelbase were lengthened in order to change the agility-optimized chassis design of the roadster in favor of better driving stability.

The front wheel is guided by an upside-down telescopic fork with a 46 mm standpipe diameter and 150 mm travel .

Market positioning

According to BMW, the XR should combine travel and touring qualities with sporting talent and suitability for everyday use. Competitive model with a comparable conception and chassis geometry is the Ducati Multistrada 1200 with a nominal output of 118 kW (160 PS). According to Katrin Pudenz, BMW has “opened up a motorcycle crossover niche and filled it with the S 1000 XR.
