The BMW HP2 Enduro is an off-road motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The enduro came on the market in autumn 2005 and is technically based on the BMW R 1200 GS K25 travel enduro . The model designation HP2 stands for High Performance ( German high-performance ), the series has the factory code K25H and the vehicle identification number (VIN) is the 0369th From August 2004 to 2006 in 2910 units in total of the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau produced. Sales started in September 2004, and in August 2006 the production of the HP2 Enduro was immediately replaced by the BMW HP2 Megamoto . The sale continued until 2008.

Technical specifications

drive

Boxer engine

The HP2 is driven by an air and oil-cooled boxer engine. The four-stroke engine has two cylinders and two camshafts and four valves per cylinder. BMW removed the central balance shaft of the GS, which makes the engine 1.5 kg lighter and revs up faster. The two cylinders have a Ø 101 mm bore , the pistons have a stroke of 73 mm with a compression ratio of 11: 1. The exposed valve covers are made of magnesium . The intake snorkel is slightly modified and has a removable splash-water deflector.

The single-plate dry clutch is operated hydraulically. The transmission has six gears. In the secondary drive , a cardan shaft with two joints transfers the torque from the gearbox output to the rear axle. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and reaches a top speed of 200 km / h.

landing gear

The HP2 has an independent chassis with a lattice frame made of steel tubes . The frame layout is based on experience with the BMW R 900RR rally motorcycle (1999–2001). In contrast to the GS, the motor is not a load-bearing element. The wide handlebars can be positioned in two different positions using asymmetrically drilled handlebar clamps.

Paralever

Instead of a heavy Telelever, the front wheel is guided by a massive upside-down fork with a 45 mm standpipe diameter and 270 mm travel. The steering head angle is 60.5 degrees, the caster 127 mm. The permissible total weight is 380 kg. The rear aluminum single- sided swing arm with Paralever torque support has an air-spring damper system from Continental with 250 mm travel.

A floating disc brake with a diameter of 305 mm and a 4-piston fixed calliper slows the front wheel. A disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm and a double-piston floating caliper works on the rear wheel.

The HP2 is supplied with cross-spoke wheels as standard. The rim sizes are 1.85 × 21 ″ at the front and 2.50 × 17 ″ at the rear. The tires are 90 / 90-21 54R at the front and 140 / 80-17 69R at the rear. The Enduro has a ground clearance of 29 cm.

Performance / consumption values

The average fuel consumption is 5.7 liters per 100 km. The fuel tank is made of polyethylene and has a capacity of 13 liters, of which 2 liters are reserve. The manufacturer recommends the use of motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 98 octane, due to the knock control , fuel with 95 octane can also be used. A regulated catalytic converter lowers the pollutants below the limit values of the Euro 3 emissions standard .

Furnishing

In terms of equipment, some of the usual BMW features such as anti-lock braking system , rev counter, main stand, pillion footrests and pannier system have been omitted. A standard spirit level is used to balance the fully adjustable chassis. Heated grips , 17 " Supermoto spoked wheels for road tires, an enduro fuel tank, a lower seat and luggage bags for the tank and rear were optionally available . The enduro was only available in the color combination" Indigo Blue / Alaska Gray ".

Competitive model with a comparable chassis design and engine power was the KTM 950 Super Enduro R.

Reviews

“Technology freaks will be enthusiastic about how BMW has managed to make an overpowered and actually too heavy vehicle with a lot of technical use off-road. In truth, however, the HP2 will fare similarly to the KTM Superenduro. Many buyers will not be found, but it will become a popular vehicle at the in-house enduro training courses and events. "

“Off-road, the new Enduro surprises the inexperienced pilot in particular, to whom it conveys unimagined 'driving pleasure'. Undeterred, the BMW pulls through the dirt, climbs the steepest hills seemingly effortlessly, descends again and takes away all fear from the driver. However, the boxer-specific design with the wide cylinder heads hinders progress in narrow, extended lanes, and on top of that, the lush bulges on the left and right of the engine threaten brute damage in the event of a fall. That slows down the forward thrust. "

“The GS is a street rider's way of probing those hard to reach places, but the HP2 is the answer for off-roaders who want to leave their buddies in the dust when the going gets rough. BMW has opened the door for any serious dirt rider who can afford a $ 19,990 retail price to transform themselves into a modern day explorer. ”

“The GS is for road riders trying their hand at hard-to-reach places, while the HP2 is the answer for off-road riders who want to leave their buddies in the dust when the going gets really rough. BMW has opened the doors wide to serious off-roaders who can afford $ 19,999 to transform themselves into a modern day explorer. "

“It's hard to recommend the BMW HP2 unless you really want one or you have the use of a lot of open land or desert. BMW's own R1200GS is better on the road, as is KTM's 950/990 Adventure - and they're much cheaper, more practical and, in most cases, as good as the HP2 off-road. "

“It is difficult to recommend the BMW HP2 unless you really want one or if you can use wide open country or desert. The R1200GS from BMW is better on the road, just like the KTMs 950/990 Adventure - and a lot cheaper, more practical and in most cases just as good off-road as the HP2. "

“Of course that begs the question, impressive as this dirty Boxer is, can a 400-plus-pound (fully gassed), $ 20,000 motorcycle be taken seriously as an off-roader? In the HP2's case, amazingly, yes, but that's not really what's going on here. This bike signifies a return to roots and a refocusing. "

“That begs the question of whether this formidable boxer, weighing over 400 pounds with a tank and priced at $ 20,000, can really be considered an off-road motorcycle. In the case of the HP2, surprisingly yes, but that's not really the point here. This motorcycle rather symbolizes a return to the roots and a refocusing. "
