The BMW R 45 is a mid-range motorcycle from BMW with a boxer engine that was built from 1978 to 1985.

In 1979, the R 45 made it to the top of the best-selling motorcycles in Germany in the 27 hp class. Up to the facelift in 1980, 15,905 R 45s had been produced, and by the end of the construction period 28,158 machines of this type had been produced.

Model history

In the mid-1970s, BMW began developing new mid-range motorcycles. The models should also differ externally from the larger models. The 1980 R 100 T hardly differs from the 1981 R 45 without fairing. A BMW R 65 came onto the market with a slightly larger displacement of 650 cc than the R 65 and R 65 LS. Ancillary units and transmissions come from the larger models. The crankshaft drive was given a shorter stroke, so that the motor was 56 mm narrower (bore × stroke: 82 mm × 61.5 mm). The R 45 was the smaller of the two versions with 473 cm³. The smaller displacement of the R 45 is due to cylinders with a 70 mm bore.

design

Hans A. Muth was responsible for the simple shape without decorations. The vehicle was superbly equipped. The tool kit was of good quality and a first aid kit was included under the seat. The price of the R 45 was only slightly below that of the larger models. BMW sold the R 65 for 7,290 DM and thus subsidized the R 45, which was offered for 5,880 DM.

Facelift

In 1981 the R 45 (and the R 65) were revised: the cylinders received a Nikasil coating instead of the cast-in gray cast iron cylinder liner, which made them more durable and lighter, the ignition was switched from interrupter to transistor ignition, and the clutch was geared up Diaphragm springs and therefore smoother running, the oil pan has been enlarged, the crankshaft lubrication has been optimized. A second interference pipe for the exhaust should help increase the life expectancy of the engines. The choke lever was moved up from the engine block to the left handlebar fitting and the air filter was designed as a plate filter with a black housing.

Executions

The BMW R 45 was available in two versions: a less powerful N version with 27 hp and a more powerful S version with 35 hp, for which a top speed of 160 km / h was specified. The list price was DM 5,880.

With otherwise the same frame and basic engine, there was the larger-displacement model BMW R 65 with 649.6 cm³ and 45 hp or from 1981 with 50 hp.
