The BMW K 1200 R Sport is a partially faired motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW . The sports tourer was presented to the press on October 11, 2006 at the Intermot in Munich . Sales of the fourth model in the K1200 series began in July 2007. From 2007 to September 2008, 1347 units were finalized at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau .

Conception

The K 1200 R Sport is based on the naked bike BMW K 1200 R and has the same drivetrain and suspension technology, but supplemented by a frame-mounted fairing half shell with the asymmetric headlights of the BMW R 1200 S . The ignition and injection electronics have been retuned in favor of a softer throttle response and smoother engine running.

construction

drive

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 120 kW (163 hp) and a maximum torque of 127 Nm at a speed of 8250 min −1 from a displacement of 1157 cm³ . The cylinder head of the transversely installed in- line engine has two overhead camshafts , which control two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder via rocker arms. The four cylinders of the four- stroke engine , which is tilted forward by 55 degrees, have a bore of 79 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 59 mm with a compression ratio of 13: 1.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.2 seconds and, according to the registration certificate, reaches a top speed of 264 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via helical gear wheels. The power separation is made possible by a hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch in an oil bath, the torque conversion by a claw-shift transmission with six gears. The secondary drive takes place via a cardan drive .

Fuel supply

A digital engine control regulates the electronic injection with integrated knock control (BMS-K). The average fuel consumption on country roads is 5.8 liters per 100 km. The fuel tank is made of plastic and has a volume of 19 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 98 octane. The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and is below the emission limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard .

landing gear

The chassis is built on an aluminum bridge frame and has a load-bearing motor-gear unit. The front wheel is guided by a Duolever with a central spring strut and 110 mm of travel. The rear wheel is guided by a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with Paralever . The suspension travel is 115 mm at the front and 120 mm at the rear.

A double disc brake with a diameter of 320 mm on the front tire and a disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm on the rear, the braking system decelerates the motorcycle from 100 km / h to a standstill over a distance of 37 meters. A partially integrated anti-lock braking system from Continental-Teves was optionally available. The cast aluminum wheels measure 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 180/55 ZR 17 at the rear, the rim size is 3.50 × 17 "at the front and 5.50 × 17" at the rear. The wheel load distribution is 50/50%. The steering head has an angle of 61 degrees, the caster is 101 mm.

The dry weight is 211 kg, the permissible total weight 450 kg. The motorcycle was offered in the colors “White Aluminum Metallic” and “Cosmic Blue”.

review

“The BMW K 1200 R Sport is the mixture of the R and S versions of the new K series. A comfortable sitting position is combined with comfortable wind protection, so that the high level of performance and speed can be used. In addition, the engine-related improvements are clearly beneficial. [...] The K 1200 R Sport combines sport, touring and everyday practicality in an excellent way. "

- Ralf Kistner : Bike and Media

“It can do everything better than the bare K1200R. It is cheaper, lighter and more comfortable. And in practice it is not a bit slower than the fully boarded K1200S. [...] The K1200R Sport was a real grandfather clock when it was new and was sold out at the end of its construction period. "

- Klaus Herder : motorcycle

“The Sport is a tweener model in BMW's K-series family, a hybrid of its fully-faired K1200S and the naked K1200R siblings. In the sportbike market as a whole, the K1200R Sport is even harder to define, with its engine placing it somewhere between a superbike and hyper-sportbikes like the Hayabusa or ZX-14. It is neither one of these extremes, however, and is miscast as the aggressive machine most motorcycle folk conjure up when they hear the term 'sportbike'. "

“The Sport is a niche model in the BMW K series, a hybrid of the fully faired K1200S and the naked sibling K1200R. In the overall sports tour market, the K1200R Sport is even more difficult to classify with a drive that is positioned somewhere between superbikes and hyper sports tourers like the Hayabusa or ZX-14 . The sport, however, is not one of these extremes, and a miscalculation between the aggressive motorcycles that most motorcyclists associate with the term sport bike. "
