The BMW R 1100 RT is a fully faired motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW with a two-cylinder boxer engine . The touring tourer has several sister models of similar construction, such as the R 1100 RS sports car and the R 1100 R naked bike, with an almost identical engine, but different fairing and chassis design. The motorcycle was presented at the IAA in September 1995 . From 1995 to July 2001 53,092 units were produced at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau .

General

The R 1100 RT replaced the R 100 RT with the 1996 model year . In addition to extensive changes to the full fairing, the engine output was increased significantly from 44 to 66 kW (90 PS) and the displacement increased from 971 cm³ to 1085 cm³. The two cylinders have a bore of Ø 99 mm, the pistons have a stroke of 70.5 mm with a compression ratio of 10.7: 1. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 196 km / h. The motorcycle has an anti-lock braking system and a regulated three-way catalytic converter as standard . The chassis is constructed in three parts and consists of a front and rear frame as well as a load-bearing motor-transmission unit. The wheel suspension was implemented by a Telelever at the front and a Paralever swing arm at the rear . The fuel tank holds 25.2 liters, of which 6 liters are in reserve. The average fuel consumption is 4.7 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90 km / h or 5.6 liters at 120 km / h. The manufacturer recommends the use of petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. The tires are 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 160/60 ZR 18 at the rear. The motorcycle weighs 285 kg when ready to drive and has a maximum payload of 205 kg.

With the 2001 model year, the R 1100 RT was replaced by the R 1150 RT .

Fully faired touring motorcycles with comparable equipment and engine characteristics are the Honda ST 1100 Pan European , the Honda Gold Wing and the Triumph Trophy 1200.

Reviews

“Despite its heavy weight of 285 kilograms, the RT is a surprisingly agile, easy-to-use motorcycle. In connection with the safe, perfectly resilient and damping chassis, driving pleasure quickly sets in on streets and lanes of all categories without a long period of getting used to: Despite its mighty appearance, the RT is downright curvy. "

- Ulf Böhringer : Süddeutsche Zeitung

“Although the R 1100 RT with its almost six hundredweight is the heavyweight of the now five-strong boxer squad, it is neither clumsy nor awkward in the city. Despite its lush mass, the thick ship can be bent so briskly into the corner, turned in as extremely quickly and hard as a light road machine. "

- Wolf Beh : Berliner Zeitung

“The boxer revs up tough and annoying with constant travel jolts and fine vibrations in the handlebar ends. The transmission is annoying to shift, intermediate gears creep in again and again. "

- Motorrad , issue 06/2008

Another major drawback is the permanent power consumption when the vehicle is stationary, with the ignition switched off. This is done by the vehicle electronics and the anti-lock braking system. The only remedy here is a main battery switch or disconnector, or a permanent connection to a suitable charger.
