Previous model BMW R 1150 GS
successor BMW R 1200 GS (K50)

The BMW R 1200 GS is a motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The enduro came in March 2004 to market and was the first model from BMW with the cc 1130 cc to 1170 minimal displacement extended horizontally opposed engine . The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal model code is K25 . From 2004 to 2012, 184,409 GS were manufactured at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau .

On October 3, 2012, the successor model BMW R 1200 GS K50 was presented at the Intermot two-wheeler fair in Cologne . Although BMW fundamentally redesigned the engine, the chassis and the drive train, the sales designation remained unchanged, only the factory code is now K50. The engine now has an output of 92 kW (125 PS).

Technical specifications

drive

The R 1200 GS is powered by an air and oil-cooled boxer engine. The four-stroke engine has two cylinders and two camshafts each (from model year 2010, previously one each) and four valves per cylinder as well as a central balancer shaft . The two cylinders have a Ø 101 mm bore , the pistons have a stroke of 73 mm and a compression ratio of 12.0: 1.

The single-plate dry clutch is operated hydraulically. The transmission has six gears. In the secondary drive , a cardan shaft with two joints transfers the torque from the gearbox output to the rear axle.

landing gear

The chassis consists of a two-part front and rear frame and has a load-bearing motor-gear unit. The front subframe is made of cast aluminum , the rear frame is made of tubular steel. The front Telelever fork has a 41 mm standpipe diameter and 190 mm travel. The rear aluminum single- sided swing arm with Paralever torque support has a central spring strut and 200 mm suspension travel. The spring preload can be mechanically adjusted five times at the front, the spring preload at the rear is infinitely variable hydraulically using a handwheel, and the rebound damping is also adjustable.

A floating double-disc “Evo” brake with a diameter of 305 mm and a 4-piston fixed calliper slows the front wheel. A single disc brake with a diameter of 265 mm and a double-piston floating caliper works on the rear wheel. The R 1200 GS is supplied with light alloy cast wheels as standard, the GS Adventure with cross-spoke wheels. The rim sizes are 2.50 × 19 ″ at the front and 4.00 × 17 ″ at the rear. The tires are 110 / 80R19 at the front and 150 / 70R17 at the rear. Cross-spoke wheels are offered as special equipment.

Performance / consumption values

The average fuel consumption is 4.3 liters per 100 km at a speed of 90 km / h or 5.5 liters per 100 km at 120 km / h. The fuel tank holds 20 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane. Operation with E10 fuel containing ethanol is possible.

mass and weight

The March 2006 offered to 2013 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure K255 has told the R 1200 GS chassis side longer suspension travel and, thanks to a larger tank volume more coverage.

Furnishing

The R 1200 GS was available in the colors red, yellow, blue and granite metallic. As an option could Teilintegral- ABS , chrome exhaust pipes , white indicator lenses , luggage holder, top case , crash bars , hand protectors, heated grips and adjustable luggage and other accessories are ordered in volume.

From 2004 the BMW R 1200 GS was available with the optional Integral ABS accessory from FTE automotive with brake booster (BKV). Constructive weaknesses led to a change of model and manufacturer. From mid-August 2006, the BMW R 1200 GS was available with the Integral ABS optional extra from Continental Teves. Since there were problems with this ABS brake system too, BMW initiated a recall officially known as a “technical conversion campaign” in April 2008 , during which the brake lines on the ABS pressure modulator were to be replaced. On May 5, 2010, the Federal Motor Transport Authority published the information under KBA reference number 2895 that this action would have to be repeated “with identical facts” from year of construction 2006–2009.

On July 11, 2008, the Federal Motor Transport Authority informed the authorities of the EU member states in the EU rapid warning system RAPEX about the risk of injury when using the hand protectors available as special accessories. Models from October 2007 are not affected by the risk of sudden wheel blockages while driving, newly developed hand protectors have been installed that cannot touch the brake or clutch levers.

In the basic configuration, the R 1200 GS cost 14,390 euros in Germany in August 2012, the R 1200 GS Adventure 15,600 euros and 16,950 and 18,800 euros in January 2013 in Austria.

Reviews

“The GS is not ahead in every discipline - with the rather tight load capacity of 188 kg (2004-07), range or off-road competence - but what counts in the end is what comes out at the end of the day: unfiltered driving fun, harmonious equipment , high practical value. "

- Tour riders

“In the end, continuity counts in every way - which means that the BMW R 1200 GS has the edge in the final bill. Because it ultimately impresses with the sum of its quality. Under the keyword "balance" no competitor of the GS can hold a candle. "
