successor BMW K 1300 R.

The BMW K 1200 R is a bare motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW and was manufactured from 2005 to 2008 at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . The naked bike was presented to the press on September 15, 2004 at the Intermot in Munich . Sales started on June 4, 2005.

Conception

The K 1200 R is technically very similar to the BMW K 1200 S , but without full fairing, with a higher handlebar, modified power delivery, modified wheelbase and caster. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 2.9 seconds and was the most powerful mass-produced muscle bike in the world until the Suzuki B-King was presented in 2007.

construction

drive

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 120 kW (163 hp) and a maximum torque of 127 Nm at a speed of 8250 min −1 from a displacement of 1157 cm³ . The cylinder head of the transversely installed in- line engine has two overhead camshafts , which control two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder via rocker arms. The four cylinders of the four-stroke engine have a bore of 79 mm in diameter, the pistons have a stroke of 59 mm with a compression ratio of 13: 1. The top speed is 262 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via helical gear wheels. The power separation is made possible by a hydraulically operated multi-plate clutch in an oil bath, the torque conversion by a claw-shift transmission with six gears. The secondary drive takes place via a cardan drive .

Fuel supply

A digital engine control regulates the electronic injection with integrated knock control (BMS-K). The average fuel consumption is 5.5 liters per 100 km at a speed of 120 km / h. The fuel tank is made of plastic and has a volume of 19 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 98 octane. The exhaust aftertreatment is carried out by a regulated three-way catalytic converter and is below the emission limit values of the Euro-3 emissions standard .

landing gear

The chassis is built on an aluminum bridge frame and has a load-bearing motor-gear unit. The front wheel is guided by a Duolever with a central spring strut and 110 mm of travel. The rear wheel is guided by a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with Paralever . A double disc brake with a diameter of 320 mm decelerates on the front tire and a disc brake with 265 mm in the rear. An anti-lock braking system that can be switched off was offered as an option. The cast aluminum wheels are 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 180/55 ZR 17 at the rear.

Compared to the fully faired BMW K 1200 S , the R has wider handlebars and a shorter fuel tank, which means that the driver sits further forward and more upright. In combination with the 11 mm shorter caster on the front wheel, the result is a slightly higher level of agility.

  • Central spring strut with lever system, spring preload hydraulically steplessly adjustable by means of a handwheel, rebound damping adjustable
  • Suspension travel front / rear 110 mm / 120 mm
  • Steering head angle 61 °
  • Trail 87 mm
  • Front rim size 3.50 × 17 "
  • Rear rim size 5.50 × 17 "
  • Front brake double disc brake, floating brake discs, diameter Ø 320 mm, 4-piston fixed calliper
  • Rear brake single disc brake, diameter Ø 265 mm, double-piston floating caliper

Dimensions / weights

The dry weight is 211 kg, the permissible total weight 450 kg.

  • Step length with empty weight: 1,810 mm
  • Empty weight ready to drive, with a full tank: 237 kg
  • Payload (with standard equipment) 213 kg

Reviews

“Here is a naked, pure motorcycle. The technology is visible from all sides, there is hardly any protection for the driver from the rushing air masses - but that's exactly what makes the so-called naked bikes or roadster motorcycles so attractive. "

- Jürgen Pander : Spiegel Online

“In addition, there is the low center of gravity due to the inclined installation position of the engine and the dynamic driving characteristics of the Duolever front wheel guide, which hardly compresses when decelerating. In combination with the mighty row quad, this means: On a K 1200 R you are extremely fast, but also extremely unspectacular. Even under full power, no front wheel rises unless you pull hard on the handlebars. And no rear wheel during heavy braking maneuvers. The wheels always stay where they belong and they keep on track under all circumstances, because neither the fork nor the short frame twist significantly. "

- Stefan Kaschel : Motorbike

“But as wonderfully angry as the wonderfully powerful engine behaves, the image of the almost undrivable monster desired by the BMW employee mentioned at the beginning doesn’t work. The stable, easily predictable and - what an ugly word - good-natured chassis puts a big dash through the bill. "

- Klaus Herder : Kradblatt
