The BMW HP2 Sport is a fully faired motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The super sports car was presented on September 28, 2007 at the international motorcycle and two-wheeler fair "Mondial Du Deux Roues" in Paris, came onto the market in March 2008 for a purchase price of 22,515 euros and is based on the BMW R 1200 S sports boxer . From January 2007 to April 2010, a total of 2259 units were manufactured at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau , 575 of which were sold in Germany.

Conception

The motorcycle was the third and last machine in the BMW HP2 series with the performance-enhanced air / oil-cooled boxer engine. The model designation HP2 stands for High Performance ( German  high-performance ), the series has the factory code K29HP and the vehicle identification number (VIN) is the 0458th

history

BMW motorcycle boss Herbert Diess formulated the project order in spring 2004 to dynamize the brand image of BMW motorcycle. Since a new design was out of the question due to a lack of budget, Gerhard Lindner as product manager for sporty vehicles and Rainer Bäumel in his role as project manager in the boxer series developed the plan to “build the coolest boxer of all time”. The starting point for development was the BMW R 1200 S , which, however, still weighed 213 kg and whose curb weight was reduced to less than 200 kg through consistent lightweight construction . Experience gained by Team BMW Motorrad Motorsport in races in the 2007 World Endurance Championship was also incorporated into the development .

The motorcycle was designed by Ola Stenegard. According to the BMW project manager Josef Maechler, Ducati was the “role model and competitor” of the HP2 Sport. Competing race replicas with a curb weight of less than 200 kg were the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and the Honda Fireblade (SC 59).

construction

drive

In addition to a modified bodywork, the main difference to the R 1200 S is the heavily revised and performance-enhanced boxer engine with two overhead camshafts per cylinder head (DOHC) and four radially arranged valves, which produces 98 kW (133 hp). The HP2 engine has larger valve diameters, milled intake ducts, lighter forged pistons and high-strength connecting rods. Each camshaft controls an intake and an exhaust valve via rocker arms. These design changes made it possible to increase the maximum engine speed from 8800 to 9500 rpm.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.1 seconds and reaches a top speed of 260 km / h. After the air / oil-cooled models of the Suzuki GSX-R series, the HP2 Sport was the most powerful air / oil-cooled series motorcycle.

landing gear

Consistent lightweight construction made it possible to reduce the curb weight (according to DIN) to 199 kg ready for driving. The self-supporting front fairing, the rear and the cylinder head covers are made of carbon fiber composite material , the exhaust is made of stainless steel. Fork bridge , footrests and handlebar stubs are milled from solid. The steering head angle is 66 degrees, the caster 86 mm. An automatic gearshift initiates the throttle release within milliseconds when upshifting, thus enabling gearshifts without having to operate the clutch. The two-in-one exhaust system made of stainless steel is located under the oil pan, the silencer under the rear. This central arrangement made it possible to increase the freedom of inclination . The fuel tank holds 16 liters, of which four liters are in reserve. The motorcycle is only approved for the transport of one person and was only available in alpine white.

Reviews

In 2009 the motorcycle won the design award of the Federal Republic of Germany in silver in the motorcycle category on the grounds that the HP2 Sport “impresses with a design that arises from the function and the very purpose of the motorcycle.” Sebastian Lang claims that “BMW with great Effort and a great attention to detail have created a sports motorcycle that, with Telelever and boxer engine, is actually unsuitable for sports. "

“The sportiest boxer machine that BMW has ever built in series weighs a lean 199 kilograms with a full tank - less is not possible, as long as the HP2 Sport is also to be road legal. No wonder that the handling is impeccable. "

“What the BMW doesn't like: Gas-to-gas-back-on. Load change reactions then occur in an inclined position. It's just a massive drive train via cardan that works. And despite the torque support, high unsprung masses can sometimes become unstable. So it's better to go the old-fashioned way: take off the gas, brake and shift gears before entering the bend. Gas commands from overrun are often followed by a nasty spurting and swallowing, then delayed throttle response. Annoying especially in city traffic and when driving down passes. The athlete is obviously not made for that. "

- Thomas Schmieder : Motorcycle

“While the HP2 doesn't produce anywhere near as much power as today's superbikes, it is a fact that once the German bike latches onto a FireBlade on the open roads, the blade will not get away. BMW didn't call it the HP2 Sport for nothing. Find it hard to believe that BMW could make a thoroughbred sportsbike out of an engine and chassis design we all thought was best suited to tourers and sport-tourers? So did we. But we should all stand corrected. Of course, you can make a decent sports bike out of nearly anything with money. "
