The BMW R 1150 GS Adventure [ ədˈvɛntʃə ] is a motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The travel enduro was presented to the press on September 13, 2001 at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt am Main . From 2002 to 2005, 17,878 Adventure based on the BMW R 1150 GS were manufactured at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . Like all models in the R series, the motorcycle is powered by a boxer engine. The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal factory code is R21 / ADV.

Technical specifications

Compared to the BMW R 1150 GS , the Adventure has longer suspension travel as standard (front / rear 20 mm each), a spring strut from WhitePower with travel-dependent damping on the single-sided swing arm , a continuous bench, a more massive and longer engine guard, hand protectors, a larger luggage rack, steel braided steel -Brake lines, a larger windshield and a flared fender (front). A crash bar to protect the engine, a 30 liter fuel tank (instead of 22 liters) and fog lights are available as options . The rims and fork tubes are anodized blue, the valve covers are painted blue. The machine can be switched to operation with normal petrol using a coding plug . A luggage system suitable for long-distance travel, consisting of a carrier system with side cases and aluminum top case, is available as an optional extra . The first and sixth gear of the transmission have a shorter ratio, the short first gear can also be ordered as an option for the BMW R 1150 GS.

engine

The air and oil-cooled boxer engine generates a nominal output of 62.5 kW (85 hp) from a displacement of 1130 cm³ at a speed of 6,750 min −1 and a maximum torque of 98  Nm at 5,250 min −1 . The two-cylinder engine has two inlet and two outlet valves per cylinder head and one overhead camshaft , bucket tappets , bumpers and rocker arms each driven by gears and chains . The four-stroke engine has a longitudinal crankshaft , wet sump lubrication, electronic intake manifold injection and electronic engine management from Bosch. The two cylinders of the transverse rotor have a bore with a diameter of 101 mm, the pistons have a stroke of 70.5 mm with a compression ratio of 10.3: 1.

The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of over 192 km / h.

The manufacturer recommends the use of unleaded motor gasoline with a knock resistance of at least 91 octane. The fuel tank has a volume of 22.1 liters, optionally also with 30 liters. The ready-to-drive weight is 285 kg, the maximum payload is 197 kg.

The tires are 110 / 80H19TL at the front and 150 / 70H17TL at the rear. The undercarriage consists of a tubular steel frame , with the engine carrying the load.

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 19 Ah and supplies the electric starter . The alternator generates an electrical output of 700 watts.

review

The BMW R 1150 GS Adventure became known through the ten-part documentary series Long Way Round and the book “The Deserts of the Earth”. Despite the extreme stress, the motorcycles showed only a few weaknesses and thus demonstrated their long-distance travel quality. Steel braided brake lines were also installed as standard.

Reviews

“In typical BMW fashion, the front plunges in powerfully when you turn the throttle, and just as rears up again under load. Driving a BMW has always been something different. The cardan drive is no exception, even if the Bavarians neutralize the ups and downs when shifting with the Paralever, the heavy rear suspension tramples over patches and joints, combined with a hearty clack. "

- Werner Koch : Motorbike

“All in all, the BMW R 1150 GS Adventure drives just incredibly well, much better than one would initially expect - after all, the BMW R 1150 GS Adventure is an even more massive, sometimes brawny version of the already large and robust version BMW R 1150 GS. "

“The new motorcycle, which is essentially based on the technology of the R 1150 GS model, was designed for two-wheeled globetrotters. Anyone planning to cross the Sahara, a trip along the Silk Road or an orientation trip around the Arctic Circle in the near future should take a closer look at the machine. "
