BMW F 800 GS version 2008

The BMW F 800 GS is an all-terrain motorcycle from the German vehicle manufacturer BMW . The travel enduro has been produced at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau since 2008 and is based on the F series . It is located below the BMW R 1200 GS boxer series and is largely identical to the BMW F 650 GS manufactured from 2008 .

The model designation GS means terrain / road , the internal designation is E8 GS, the factory code K72.

history

When the BMW F 800 S and F 800 ST were presented in 2006, it became known that a travel enduro version with the two-cylinder engine of the new F series was also planned. The BMW F 800 GS was presented to the public for the first time on November 6, 2007 at the 65th EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan . Sales started in March 2008. At the International Design Excellence Award 2008, the BMW F 800 GS made it into the final selection.

Facelift

For the 2009 season, the motorcycle will be offered with LED indicators instead of white indicators. The American magazine Rider Magazine named the F 800 GS motorcycle of the year 2009.

From model year 2011, the remaining range display in the optional on-board computer has been replaced by a separate mileage count when the reserve fuel quantity (4 liters) has been reached.

In the first two years of production, there were several recalls and technical campaigns on the part of the manufacturer. Among other things, the transmitter for the fuel gauge was changed, the fastening of the cooling water hose revised, the front quick-release axle and the chain set renewed and new on-board software installed.

A first facelift took place from the 2013 model year. This mainly comprised a modified design of the radiator cowling. In the same year, the model range was expanded to include the BMW F 800 GS Adventure with the same engine and chassis, but a larger fuel tank, windshield and equipment.

In 2018 the F 800 GS were replaced by the F 750 GS and F 850 GS after around 165,000 units .

Constructive features

Rotax 804 as a load-bearing element of the chassis

The at Rotax -made two-cylinder in-line four-stroke engine Rotax 804 with electric starter and electronic intake manifold injection is liquid cooled and has four valves per cylinder. They are actuated by two overhead camshafts (dohc) . The crank pin offset is 360 °. The multi-plate oil bath clutch is cable operated. The claw-shift six-speed gearbox has short shift travel. A sealing ring chain transmits the power to the rear wheel. The engine has a cylinder angle of 8.5 ° and is therefore almost vertical. It is around a kilogram lighter than the S / ST variant. The exhaust system with regulated catalytic converter is made of stainless steel.

The tubular steel frame encloses the supporting engine. The rear section is screwed on. The upside-down telescopic fork from Marzocchi has a mm inner tube diameter of 45 mm and a spring travel of the 230th The two-arm swing arm made of light metal has an adjustable spring strut from ZF Sachs with 215 mm of travel. The rear, directly linked suspension strut has travel-dependent damping. Spring preload and rebound damping are adjustable.

The motorcycle is equipped at the front with double brake discs with a diameter of 300 mm and two-piston calipers and at the rear with a single brake disc with 265 mm and a single-piston caliper. The braking systems are from Brembo . The anti-lock braking system can be switched off. The wire-spoke wheels have aluminum rims measuring 21 inches (front) and 17 inches (rear).

As with all F-series motorcycles, the 16-liter tank is located under the seat, which keeps the center of gravity low. The tank opening is on the right-hand side, level with the pillion seat. The starter battery and the airbox are located above the engine . The seat height is 880 mm. An alternative bench with less upholstery reduces the seat height to 830 mm. A transparent plastic disc serves as a windbreak.

Color combinations

The motorcycle was offered in 2008 and 2009 in the color combinations sunset yellow / black silk gloss and dark magnesium / metallic . From 2010 it will be available in the color combinations lava orange metallic / black silk gloss and alpine white uni . In addition, a special model 30 years GS was offered.

In 2011 there will be special models in desert blue uni / alpine white uni (Trophy) and deep black / granite gray metallic matt / nürburgsilber metallic (triple black). In 2012, the only color combination offered is graphitan metallic black . The 2013 models are available in kalamata metallic , cordoba blue uni and alpine white uni .

Tire approval

The F 800 GS has tire approvals for Bridgestone Battle Wing BW 501 G / BW 502 G, Continental TKC 80, Continental TKC 70, Metzeler MCE Karoo 2 (T) / MCE Karoo (T), Metzeler Tourance EXP, Metzeler Tourance NEXT, Michelin as standard Anakee / Anakee C, Pirelli Scorpion Trail Front / Scorpion Trail G, Heidenau K60 Scout.

Reviews

“With the 800 GS, BMW is revitalizing what used to be a strong segment. Namely the robust enduro all-rounder like an Africa Twin or R 80 GS . Robust, indestructible machines that look good in any environment. "

- Gert Thöle : Motorbike

“The F 800 GS combines real off-road virtues with excellent road suitability. A travel enduro in the best sense of the word. It closes the gap between the now round 100 hp large enduros, such as the R 1200 GS or the KTM 990 Adventure, and the much lighter single cylinders. "

- Andreas Reimar : mototraveller

"The seat cushion is too narrow and too hard, the windshield too flat and the tank in the rear too small."

- Till Kohlmey : motorcyclist

“The 85 hp are enough for a motorway speed of around 200 km / h. The 800 twin, standing upright in the newly designed frame, delivers its power very evenly over the entire speed range, pushes smoothly even from low speeds, and is elastic and low in vibration. "

- 2 wheels

“While the large 1200 GS is far removed from the real adventure motorcycle both in terms of price and weight and an Africa Twin has not been available for years, the F800GS is an obvious alternative. The only handicap: This GS is not exactly low with a seat height of at least 850 mm, and with a full tank of 221 kilos it is also the heaviest in the F program. "

- Till Kohlmey : Touring driver
