The BMW K 1200 LT (for L uxus- T ourer ) is a 1998 available to 2009 touring motorcycle from BMW , which was first offered for DM 34,400 and the model K 1100 LT replaced. As a motorcycle in the Supertourer category , the K 1200 LT was positioned as a competitor to the Honda Gold Wing , among others .

Furnishing

The first version of the K 1200 LT was already extensively equipped from the Berlin-Spandau factory . The standard equipment included, for example, cruise control , electrically operated reverse gear, on-board computer, radio / cassette combination and an electrically adjustable windshield. In contrast to the previous model, the non-removable case system with top case and two side cases has a storage space of around 120 liters (with standard equipment, the optional CD changer reduces the storage space in the right case by a few liters). The curb weight, however, added up to over 385 kg, the possible payload is 213 kg.

engine

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine was a further development of the horizontally installed in- line engine with a displacement of 1100 cm³ from the previous model series K 1100. This engine was expanded and modified to 1200 cm³ in 1996 for the K 1200 RS ; the nominal power increased to 130 hp. For the LT version, however, the engine has been trimmed to a wider, usable torque range (over 90 Nm just above idling speed and 115 Nm maximum torque at 4750 rpm) and a reduced peak output of 98 hp for insurance benefits. Instead of a choke as in the previous model, an automatic cold start system with an electronically controlled throttle valve actuator was installed; a regulated three-way catalytic converter was standard equipment from the start (on the K 1100 LT initially only on request). The transmission has five gears, the last of which is designed as an overdrive . The engine is cooled by two radiators supported by fans.

Chassis, brakes

The chassis is built on a very sturdy cast aluminum frame, whereby the engine is not a load-bearing element in order to avoid vibrations. The cladding, fuel tank, seats, case and exhaust system are integrated into the body. Chassis side, the K 1200 LT had with the previous model, except for the rear Paralever - Cardan swingarm little in common. The Telelever swing arm at the front was completely different from the conventional telescopic fork suspension used until then . The chassis and chassis geometry ensured good controllability and “light” handling , which is not typical for its class, despite the high vehicle weight .

A double disc brake with a diameter of 305 mm and 4-piston brake calipers decelerates on the front wheel, and a floating brake disc with a diameter of 285 mm on the rear. The anti-lock braking system in the further developed second version required high manual forces, which is why the braking force-assisted integral ABS from FTE automotive was taken into series production as a fully integral version in autumn 2000 . This system was also installed in the K 1200 LT after August 2006 and not the integral ABS from Continental-Teves , which was new at the time and has since been used in all other BMW motorcycles of the K and R series (except for the R 1200 S). is used.

Electrical system

The starter battery has a capacity of 19 Ah and supplies the electric starter . The alternator of the alternator generates an electrical output of 700 watts. The reversing aid is driven by the starter and has a gear that connects the starter with the drive shaft . The engine is controlled by a Motronic MA 2.4 with map control.

Facelift

A revised model was presented in model year 2004. The most important innovations were a more powerful motor with 85 kW (116 PS) and a maximum torque of 120 Nm, an electro-hydraulically extendable main stand, a new spring element for the rear wheel guide with travel-dependent damping and optional xenon light . The base price in August 2006 was 20,500 euros.
