As a government vehicle, the motorcycle is also offered with a smaller engine than the R 900 RT. A newly designed successor has been available since 2014 with the K52 series from BMW under the same sales name.

technology

The two-cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 81 kW (110 hp). The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.9 seconds and reaches a top speed of 223 km / h. The air and oil-cooled four-stroke - boxer engine having a displacement of 1170 cm 3 , mm with a bore of 101, a stroke of 73 mm and a compression ratio of 12.0: 1st

The chassis consists of a front and rear frame with a load-bearing motor- gearbox unit. The suspension setting can be changed electronically in nine stages via the spring preload and damping. The standard, partially integrated anti-lock braking system controls the braking behavior in critical situations.

The two side cases have a storage volume of 32 liters each. Ready to drive and with a full tank, the R 1200 RT weighs 259 kg. The maximum payload is 236 kg. The fuel tank has a capacity of 25 liters, of which approx. 4 liters are in reserve and with a consumption of approx. 5 liters per 100 km enables a maximum range of over 500 kilometers. Depending on the driving style, the R 1200 RT consumes between 4.5 and 7.5 liters per 100 km. The manufacturer recommends using Superplus / Super with 98/95 octane . The wheel suspension was implemented at the front by a Telelever and at the rear by a two- jointed Paralever single-sided swing arm. The front tires are 120/70 ZR 17 and rear 180/55 ZR 17.

Technically, the tourer is largely identical to the BMW R 1200 ST sports tourer , but equipped with full fairing and cases as standard.

Motorcycles with comparable characteristics are Ducati ST3 , Honda ST1300 Pan European , Moto Guzzi Norge 1200 , Triumph Sprint ST and Yamaha FJR1300 .

criticism

“The new RT is clearly better than the old one in many ways. The 1200 boxer shows in every situation that he can provide power in abundance. The chassis conveys an agile handiness that is more familiar from smaller machines. The comfort and the optional equipment options leave little to be desired. With a wide range of equipment, sufficient seating and plenty of loading options, the new RT impressively asserts its place in the row of luxury tourers. "
