The BMW R nineT Urban G / S is a motorcycle from the vehicle manufacturer BMW . The higher-lying roadster , unclad except for the lamp mask, "with a deliberate off-road appearance" was presented on November 10, 2016 at the EICMA motorcycle fair in Milan . The motorcycle is largely based on the BMW R nineT Scrambler and, like all models in the R series with a boxer engine, is finally assembled at the BMW plant in Berlin in Spandau . Sales started at the beginning of 2017. BMW is marketing the motorcycle within its Heritage product range and describes it as an “homage to the beginnings of G / S ”. After Pure (K22), Scrambler (K23) and Racer (K32), the Urban G / S (K33) is the fourth derivative of the BMW R nineT (K21) presented in 2013 .

Concept study

On June 9, 2016, BMW presented the Concept Lac Rose design study at the “Wheels & Waves” motorcycle festival in the French seaside resort of Biarritz . The Concept Lac Rose was the concept study of an all-terrain motorcycle with a boxer engine. The enduro based technically on the roadster BMW R NINET and is a tribute to the travel enduro BMW R 80 G / S (1980-1987) and of its derived Rally factory bike HPN GS1000 Paris-Dakar , the 1983-1985 three times in a row the desert rally Paris-Dakar won.

concept

BMW won the Paris-Dakar rally at Gaston Rahier 1985 (in the Neckarsulm two-wheeler museum )

According to Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad, the Concept Lac Rose is a “deliberately relaxed and independent interpretation of the winning bike from the Paris-Dakar Rally in 1985.” Heinrich categorizes the motorcycle as a “Roadster with some typical off-road -Qualities". The name of the study refers to the pink salt lake Retba (French Lac Rose lak ʀoz ), the former destination of the Paris-Dakar rally, 35 km north of the capital Dakar near the Atlantic coast.

The Concept Lac Rose how the R80G / S Paris-Dakar the brand's two-cylinder boxer engine with single-sided swingarm and shaft drive, a tubular frame, a rock guard in front of the oil cooler and an underride guard, a handlebar fixed headlight mask with round headlights, a large-volume fuel tank, enduro-typical high Mudguards and hand guards. Better off-road mobility is achieved through longer spring travel and spoked wheels with studded tires. The concept vehicle was painted in the orange and white colors of the factory motorcycle from 1985 and the blue and red stripes of M GmbH were added to the fuel tank . The short bench and the small luggage rack for a tool bag are also borrowed from this model. The surface of the cylinder heads has been revised and reinforced with horizontal fins.

construction

The Urban G / S differs from the Scrambler in terms of the choice of color and paintwork, lamp mask, high-mounted front mud flap and the lower-lying rear silencer as well as the tires. Just like its sister models in the nineT series, Urban G / S uses the second generation four-valve boxer engine introduced in 2004 in its last evolutionary stage, which has also complied with the limit values of the Euro 4 emissions class since 2018.

drive

The air and oil-cooled two - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 81 kW (110 PS). It has a displacement of 1170 cm³; Bore 101 mm, stroke 73 mm, compression of 12.0: 1. The valves of the four-stroke engine are controlled via speed- fixed rocker arms of two chain-driven, overhead camshafts . The crank pin offset of the two opposing pistons is 180 °. A balance shaft compensates for engine vibrations. The motorcycle accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 220 km / h.

landing gear

The black, three-part steel tubular space frame consists of a front and a two-part rear frame with a load-bearing motor-gear unit. The basic construction of the frame is based on a frame front part with an integrated control head and a frame rear part with a swing arm mount. With the modular frame concept, the pillion footrest system and the eight-fold screwed frame end piece can be dismantled and replaced. The wheelbase is 1527 mm, the caster 110.6 mm and the steering head angle 61.5 degrees. The rear wheel is guided by a single-sided swing arm made of cast aluminum with a central spring strut, the Paralever . The chassis setting can be changed via spring preload and rebound damping on the rear swing arm .

The dog-shift gearbox has six gears with a shorter final drive ratio and comes from former Sports Boxer BMW R 1200 S . The deceleration is supported by a standard anti-lock braking system . The motorcycle has cast spoke wheels with black anodized flat shoulder rims made of light alloy at the front and rear as standard, with a diameter of 19 inches at the front and 17 inches at the rear. The tires are 120 / 70ZR19 at the front and 170 / 60ZR17 at the rear.

The white paintwork of the fuel tank in combination with the tank decor in two shades of blue and the light red seat are based on the motorsport colors of BMW. In the center of the cockpit there is an analog speedometer with a small monochrome liquid crystal display that provides information on the time, engine oil temperature and mileage. The fuel tank has a capacity of 17 liters.

Sales description

The letter R in the four-part sales designation identifies all BMW motorcycles with a two-cylinder boxer engine. The made-up word for the English number “nineT” (instead of the correct spelling “ninety”) was introduced in 2013 to mark the 90th anniversary of BMW Motorrad. Urban is the head word for urbanity . The letter combination G / S has stood for "terrain / road" since 1980. The internal development code is K33, the vehicle identification number (VIN) is 0J41.

The bulky sales name is sometimes also abbreviated as R9T UGS.

Reviews

For Michael Edlinger from Autofilou , the Urban G / S is a “very successful lifestyle bike in heritage style”, but due to the tires and seating position it is “not a device for long tours and also not for off-road”. Even for the editor and vehicle tester Walter Wille, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung does not meet the high “expectations regarding versatility”, but the machine “looks fabulous and is a lot of fun. When showing off in urban areas and when running hot in the hinterland. BMW itself only speaks of 'possible use in easy terrain', which almost every motorcycle can do. The tight saddle is more like a solo seat. "

“Many BMW fans have been waiting for a motorcycle like this: A GS without unnecessary frills in the look of the rally legend. Who needs water cooling when the tried and tested air-cooled boxer still develops enough pressure to keep it burning properly on country roads and even gravel? Especially since the retro GS should also be lighter than the water-cooled GS. "

- Florian Pillau : Heise Online

“Once the Urban is tilted, it runs neutrally. Extremely tough when turning in fast alternating bends, with short bend distance the necessary impulse demands strength and brings restlessness to the chassis with the softly tuned, non-adjustable fork. [...] The Urban is only a visual reminiscence of the glorious G / S, because it is not suitable for off-road use. If that doesn't bother you, you can enjoy style and simplicity. "
