After considerable success in enduro sports , the motorcycle manufacturer BMW launched the GS series for the first time in 1980, an off-road motorcycle with a large-volume boxer engine and single-sided swing arm . The first model, the BMW R 80 G / S, with the classic two-valve boxer engine and a Monolever swing arm, was followed in 1988 by models with a Paralever swing arm and from then on also available with 1000 cm³ (R 100 GS). Travel enduros with the more modern four-valve boxer engines as well as single-cylinder and two-cylinder in- line engines came onto the market later . The letters GS initially stood for "Terrain / Sport", later for "Terrain / Road".

Hubert Auriol , Gaston Rahier , Jutta Kleinschmidt and Richard Sainct had notable successes in the Dakar Rally on BMW GS motorcycles . The author Ted Simon made his second trip around the world on a converted R 80 GS Basic at the age of 70. The actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman made their motorcycle trip from London via Russia to New York City on BMW R 1150 GS Adventure motorcycles in 2004 and in 2007 from John O'Groats (Scotland) via London through the African continent to Cape Town on BMW R1200GS . The trips, accompanied by a cameraman and a crew with two off-road vehicles, have been published under the titles “ Long Way Round ” and “ Long Way Down ” as well as a ten-part documentary series and a book.

Since 2009, various more or less off-road models of the BMW G 650 model series have also been on the market (Enduro, Scrambler and Supermoto ). With the HP2 , BMW previously produced a thoroughbred enduro, which - in contrast to the much heavier GS travel enduro - is less suitable for touring, but is designed almost exclusively for off-road use. From 2008, BMW launched the G 450 X, a new, lightweight sports enduro. In addition, new models of are F 650 GS and F 700 GS and 800 GS F introduced by series of two-cylinder.
