Alfred Wirthmann

Alfred Wirthmann (born December 30, 1927 in Nüdlingen ; † July 28, 2020 ) was Professor of Geography and Geoecology at the University of Karlsruhe .

Scientific career

Wirthmann studied in Würzburg, where he also received his doctorate. In 1957, as a member of the local committee with Julius Büdel , Horst Mensching , Helmut Jäger and Alfred Herold, he was involved in organizing the German Geographers' Day. Wirthmann completed his habilitation in geography at the University of Würzburg on land forms on the Edge Island in southeast Svalbard. Eer was Büdel's representative at the Institute for Africa Research . He is considered an expert in polar geography as well as in tropical geography . Wirthmann established the geoecology diploma course at the University of Karlsruhe in the 1980s .

Alfred Wirtmann's successor at the Chair of Geography and Geoecology at the University of Karlsruhe was the Tunisia expert Manfred Meurer in 1992 .
