Horst G. Mensching (born June 5, 1921 in Möllbergen ; † February 19, 2008 in Hamburg ) was a German geographer and geomorphologist and professor at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Mensching was the son of a teacher and after his military service as a pilot in the Second World War he studied geography (as well as geology and chemistry) in Göttingen and received his doctorate there in 1949 with Julius Büdel with the dissertation of gravel meadows and floodplains in the Lower Saxony mountainous region . Then he was Büdel's assistant in Göttingen and followed him to Würzburg in 1952, where he completed his habilitation in the same year with the thesis Morphological Studies on the High Atlas in Morocco . It was based on intensive field research in Morocco, where he mainly researched the Quaternary geology of the High Atlas (glaciation in the Pleistocene, rivers, climate history). In 1958 he became an associate professor in Würzburg and in 1962 a full professor of geography at the Technical University in Hanover and from 1974 a full professor in Hamburg. From 1976 to 1978 he was director of the Institute for Geography and Economic Geography. In 1985 he retired.

He mainly dealt with Africa, for example desertification in the Sahel zone.

In 1974 he became a member of the Leopoldina and the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen , in 1979 a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and 1986 honorary member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences . In 1995 he received an honorary doctorate in Würzburg. He was also the recipient of the Franz von Hauer Medal of the Austrian Geographical Society (1998) and the Eduard Rüppell Medal of the Frankfurt Geographical Society .
