  • 1868 : Former Uruguayan President Venancio Flores is assassinated four days after the end of his term in office while the country is in the Triple Alliance War . However, an accompanying uprising fails and the leaders are shot dead on the same day.

  • 1945 : With the landing of US troops on the volcanic island of Iwojima , the battle for Iwojima begins , one of the bloodiest of the Pacific War , which will last until March 26th.
  • 1976 : Iceland breaks diplomatic relations with Great Britain in the course of the third cod war .
  • 2000 : The movement against the Austrian government coalition made up of the FPÖ and ÖVP reaches its climax when between 150,000 (police estimate) and 300,000 people (according to the organizers) at a mass rally entitled "Resistance against black and blue, against racism and welfare cuts" in Vienna take part.

1600: The Peruvian city of Arequipa under ash rain
  • 1600 : The Huaynaputina volcano in Peru explodes. It is the most devastating volcanic eruption in historical times in South America. The chronicler Waman Puma de Ayala records the disaster.
  • 1860 : The Canadian-British Allan Line's Hungarian passenger steamer is thrown against the cliffs in a snow storm off Sable Island on the coast of Nova Scotia and sits aground. Due to the storm, no rescuers can get to the ship. All 205 passengers and crew members die.
  • 1985 : When landing at Bilbao ending Iberia - Flight 610 in a disaster . The aircraft loses the left wing after colliding with an antenna system on Mount Oiz . The following crash kills all 148 inmates.
