Josef Baron (born February 19, 1920 in Upper Silesia ; † January 1, 2020 ) was a German painter and sculptor who was mainly known for sacred subjects.

Live and act

Born in Upper Silesia, Josef Baron was a soldier in Russia and France during World War II . After the Second World War, he first studied interior design , art history and wood carving in Flensburg , then switched to the Düsseldorf Art Academy , where he became a student of Ewald Mataré . After the economically difficult early years, his master instructed him to design the pilgrimage basilica of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Werl , the convincing execution of which led to Baron's artistic breakthrough. From the 1960s he designed numerous sacred buildings in Germany and abroad. Significant works can be found, for example, in the cloister of Hildesheim Cathedral , in St. Marien in Herne , St. Pius in Münster and in St. Michael in Emden . Baron's other plants are located in Caracas ( Venezuela ), Beirut ( Lebanon ), Cairo ( Egypt ), Kuala Lumpur ( Malaysia ) and Papua New Guinea .

Josef Baron lived and worked in Unna-Hemmerde . In the home area in particular, there are several profane works, of which the donkey fountain on the old market in Unna is well known. In 2007 the artist vehemently opposed the demolition of a memorial he designed against the war, which stood in the way of the planning of the Holzwickede community and was to be moved to a secluded place: “It is not right that we have everything unpleasant in ours Simply push away society, such as poverty or the Holocaust . "

Together with Ernst Oldenburg , Carlernst Kürten and Wilhelm Buschulte , Baron formed the artist quartet "OKBB" in Unna.
