Wilhelm Buschulte
Wilhelm Buschulte (born November 1, 1923 in Unna , Westphalia ; † March 28, 2013 there ) was a German painter , graphic artist and glass artist .
resume
From 1943 to 1950 - with interruptions due to the war - Buschulte studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . He was a master student with Hans Gött . Buschulte has been living freelance in Unna since 1953.
From 1951 Buschulte turned to artistic window design. It constitutes the center of his work and his actual life's work, at least that which is accessible to a wider public. In the 1950s and 1960s, he also designed hanging discs with religious representations in an internalized, almost naive style. Not committed to any artistic technique, Buschultes endeavors to achieve the unity and harmony of (church) space and window design, as can be seen most impressively in its “light simplicity” (Buschulte) in the window design of the Paulskirche in Frankfurt . Biblical topics can be found as well as topics from the Catholic tradition of saints, abstract design as well as his clearly recognizable effort in the 1990s for the simplest (geometric) shapes, which is therefore more and more a painting on glass than painting with glass.
In his late work he abandoned organic shapes and bright colors (with the exception of windows in Paderborn Cathedral ) in favor of geometric patterns made of clear and gray glass. In all of his designs, however, the artistic endeavor to serve the church space while renouncing any superficial illustrative effect and thus to participate in the task of preaching. "His monumental glazing is abstract, but some have figurative echoes and sometimes - especially in the 1980s - enclose symbolic organic forms."
In addition to participating in exhibitions at home and abroad, he also staged his own exhibitions. Works by him can be found in museums at home and abroad. The number of stained glass windows he designed is hard to miss.
Together with Ernst Oldenburg , Carlernst Kürten and Josef Baron , Buschulte formed the artist quartet "OKBB" in Unna.
