Westönnen is a district of Werl and is located in the district of Soest in Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia . The place has 2656 inhabitants and is the second largest district of Werl. The current mayor is Martin Beudel (as of 2010).

Townscape

In 2008, 2,656 inhabitants lived in the 8.95 square kilometer town. About 79% of the area is used for agriculture or as gardens and grassland. The lowest point, at Lohmühle in the north of the district is 79 meters above sea level, the highest, in the direction of Haar at about 174 meters above sea level.

The townscape is strongly characterized by the use of green sandstone in buildings and walls. The place had its own quarries where the stone was quarried. The sandstone deposits were created in the Cretaceous period from deposits of shells and sand. The stones weather relatively quickly because of the high content of water-soluble lime, so mining has been stopped. Worth mentioning are the property walls that run through the place.

history

St. Cecilia, side view

The fertile soil of the Soest Börde , the location on Hellweg and sources nearby, have always favored the settlement.

Westönnen was mentioned for the first time in 973 in the directory of the Order of St. Cäcilia in Cologne and is therefore over 1000 years old. Westönnen used to be called Westuenen or Westunen. A ministerial family de Tuinen was mentioned in a deed of 1169 by the patroclist monastery.

The outbreak of the Soest feud led to looting and arson in the area, after 1448 the feud was over and Westönnen remained with the archbishopric of Cologne.

During the Thirty Years War , the place had to host and feed many soldiers. This brought the people to the limit of their resilience, in 1636 the plague broke out and claimed many victims.

For 1707 68 households with about 480 inhabitants are occupied. The red dysentery broke out in 1740, 82 people died.

In 1761, during the Seven Years' War, around 260,000 soldiers camped in the area.

During a fire disaster in 1829, six farms burned to the ground in the center of the village, and since then a fire procession has been held every year.

Affiliation

From the beginning until 1803 Westönnen belonged to the Archdiocese of Cologne . Even during the Soest feud (1444), the Westönner took the side of the Cologne electors and bishops. From 1803 to 1816 Westönnen was part of the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, after which it finally became part of Prussia . On July 1, 1969, Westönnen was incorporated into Werl. One of the sights is the Lohe House .

History of important farms and house inscriptions

It used to be customary to put inscriptions in the door or gate beams of the half-timbered houses, some have been handed down.

  • Hof Brandes an der Bachstrasse: IN 1829, MAY 20, AFTERNOON, OUR VILLAGE WAS LOOKED FOR BY A LARGE FIRE, WHICH FOUNDED MY ANCESTORS AND MANY OTHERS. ON JULY 6TH OF THE SAME YEAR I WAS BUILT BY THE HELP OF GOD AND MAN'S HANDS BY THE MARRIAGES THEODOR BRAND AND MARIA CATHARINA GUTHOFF.
  • Hof Luig-Plattfaut: The courtyard, which was demolished in 1966, was located on Weststrasse between the Dreimeister company and Hof Schriek. The inscription above the old Deelentür has been handed down in a photo document. BUILT IN JULII, FOURTH OF JULY, 1864 BY EHLEIK FRANZ LUIG AND ANA MARIA WATERHOFF
  • Schleep-Büscher farm: The farm was located on the grounds of today's Cäcilia kindergarten; it used to be called Schleebusch-Hof. It was destroyed by fire in 1829 and rebuilt as a half-timbered courtyard that same year. Above the beam of the Deelentore there was a reading. On May 20, 1829, God came home to us through flames and our house collapsed hopelessly. And on July 25th of the same year this house was bought for us through our own diligence, through human help, but mostly through God's help. Bernhard Büscher and Theresia Westerhoff, married couple.
  • Holthoff farm: The farm was owned by the Plattfaut family until around 1800 and belonged to the manor of the Himmelpforten monastery . The Holthoff family, who came from Holtum , took over the property in 1811. The bar inscription of this courtyard in the Breite Straße reads JOSEPH HOLTHOFF 18 AND WIFE 81 JOS. SCHOOL PICTURES.
  • Hof Stratmann-Müller: This farm is located on Mummelstraße, it was once part of the manor of Welver Monastery . The inscription reads PHILLIPP STRATMANN gnt. MÜLLER AND WIFE LINA b. HOLTHOFF 1881 .
  • Hof Linzbach: The courtyard on the broad street was demolished to make room for a new machine and warehouse. The inscription bar from 1810 has been preserved and stored. The inscription reads THAT THE MARRIAGES NAMED FRANS HENNEMAN FROM HERE AND THE WIFE ELISABETH TOP FROM MAUWIKE HAVE THIS CONSTRUCTION DONE BY GOD'S HELP AND MASTER BREMEKE FOR NECESSARY USE ON REAR LASEN DONE ON JUNE 13TH ANNO 1810 . This farm used to be part of the Soest Walburgis monastery .
  • Hof Sasse: The important Westphalian half-timbered courtyard stood on Breite Straße, the preserved Deelen beam dates from 1829. In that year several courtyards in the village burned down. After the fire, the courtyard was rebuilt in half-timbered houses and provided with the preserved beams. The courtyard burned down again in 1963, the old Deelen beam could be preserved. It bears the inscription Widow Catharina Margaretha Menze out of Gerlingsen. A conflagration made me ashes d. May 20th again brought up by God's help and human work d. September 12th, the married couple Henrich Stewen and Anna Margarethe Rüsse from Wibringsen had this house built. In the year 1829 The old beam hangs today on the south side of the newly built house.
  • Hof Kenter: The courtyard from 1784 is one of the oldest surviving half-timbered buildings in the village. The inscription in the bar says ANNO 1784 THE 24 MEY IS THE FIRST BUILDING OF THIS HOUSE WITH GOD'S HÜLFF BEGAN BY PHILIP KENTER AND M. THERESIA SCHNAP. ANNO 1786 THE 23 MEY BY PHILIP KENTER FULLY GOD SAVE IT FOR UNGLCK AND FIRE AND BLESS IT WITH FULL HAND. JOHANNES THEODOR KENTER AND ELISABETH RIENHOFF THE WOMEN AND OWNERS OF THIS HOUSE. SI DEUS PRO NOBIS QUIT CONTRA NOS (If God is for us, who is against us). The Deelentür is, as otherwise not usual, built into the side of the house, because of the location of the property, this was the only possibility for development. The name Kenter has only been passed down since the middle of the 18th century. The previous owners were called Schriewer or Schreiber.

Church conditions

Presumably the Caecilienstift in Cologne suggested the establishment of a parish and the building of a church, this conclusion is drawn from the patronage of Cäcilia. An exact time of these processes has not been handed down, but this certainly happened in the 13th century. Ostönnen still belonged under de Moder to Westönnen (under the mother in Westönnen) in the 16th century and a pleban Johannes in Ostönnen is documented for February 15, 1296. In a register that was completed in the second half of the 16th century, the provost of Rumbeck Monastery J. v. Falckenberg entries indicating the existence of a parish at the end of the 13th century. The pastors were appointed by the abbess of the Cecilia monastery without ever having visited the place. Before the council in Trent it was possible and quite common to have one or more parishes transferred to one or more parishes after receiving the minor ordinations (or before) in order to earn a living from the proceeds of the benefices . The first priest mentioned in Westönnen was a certain Johannes, who was mentioned in documents in 1288. Then came Godefridus in 1315, Reckewyn in 1363 and Johannes Brunstein before 1475. Most of the pastoral care tasks were performed by people priests who were appointed by the parishes. The vicarage was well endowed in the Middle Ages; the profitable Risse farm in Mawicke had belonged to it since 1400. Pastor Johannes Ketteler bequeathed 200 Reichstalers in his will in 1665, as the basis for the establishment of a vicariate to St. John. The vicar had to read mass on Sundays and public holidays and every Tuesday and Friday. The foundation should serve to increase the glory of God as well as the constant education of the youth . The teacher should get the interest from the capital, which proves the existence of a school in the village. A rectory with a garden belonged to the church, which used to be fenced and looked like a courtyard. The moat was filled in at the end of the 19th century. Almost 90% of all Westerners are members of the Catholic parish. Since the spring of 2005, Westönnen has been part of a community association with the St. Walburga Church in Werl , because the pastor retired and no successor could be found.

St. Cecilia

The church building is made of green sandstone from the nearby quarry. The church was destroyed and rebuilt in the 19th century.

St. Josef School

Pastor Johannes Ketteler founded the Johannes Vicarie in his will in 1665. The owner was obliged to instruct the youth of the parish in writing, reading and Christianity. The Vikarieschule was in 1800 the only school in the parish Westönnen. After the Kulturkampf, the school vicarage was extinguished in 1876.

260 children attended school in 1880. They were taught by two teachers. A fourth class was established in 1902 and a fifth in 1931. A new school building was built in 1905, which was expanded in 1935. Because of the influx of displaced persons, two more classes were set up in 1947. Another new school was built in 1964.

Transport links

The place has always been on Hellweg , a medieval trade connection and helped it to a certain degree of prosperity. The Prussian government had the Chaussee built from 1822 to 1823 , which later became Reichsstraße and then Bundesstraße 1 . It runs from Aachen to Königsberg .

The Ruhr-Lippe Kleinbahn set up a stop in the village for the Hamm – Werl – Ostönnen line in 1898. To improve transport connections, the municipality tried to get a train station on the Dortmund-Soest line , and a corresponding stop was set up on October 1, 1901. Today the Hellweg Bahn serves this station at least every half hour.

Waters

There are a number of ponds, streams and pools in the village. The Mühlenbach is the largest of the brooks, it comes from the Haar and touches the northern municipality area. It flows into the Salzbach in Werl and used to feed the Lohmühle. The Siepenbach is a tributary of the Mühlenbach, it rises in the Börn, a source pond. According to tradition, the Börn has never dried up, it is about a meter deep, 10 meters wide and 50 meters long.

The largest pond in the village is the day pond with a depth of about 2.50 meters and a size of 60 × 75 meters, it used to be filled with carp, today common toads spawn here.

The sacrificial pond in the immediate vicinity of the church is fed by several springs and occasionally dries up.

The Westönner Bach has been piped through the village since 1954, and has its origins in Wietborn on the Kerkhoff farm.

There is an extensive pond and moat system at Lohe Castle .
