Jürgen Tomicek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jürgen Tomicek (born May 17, 1957 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) is a German cartoonist . He works and lives today in Werl, Westphalia .

Tomicek's caricatures are printed in millions of copies every day by newspapers and magazines in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. After Werler had initially regularly presented his humorous and critical commentary on local politics in the local edition of the local newspaper Westfalenpost , the then full-time police officer made a career as a cartoonist. Today he is one of the most prominent satirical press illustrators in German-speaking countries. The Berlin stage and the wide world are now his favorite subjects.

Life

At school Tomicek was the class clown, as he himself admits in retrospect. After his school days in Bad Bergzabern and Werl , he completed an apprenticeship as an industrial clerk in Werl from 1972 to 1975 with his first work in the areas of advertising graphics and product drawing. During the nights Jürgen Tomicek practiced drawing portraits during his school and apprenticeship , although some time ago he explained in a conversation:

"I never wanted to make drawing a job, it's way too beautiful for that"

- Jürgen Tomicek

He turned down a scholarship , which at a young age might have been the start of full-time work as an artist.

Following a passion, I changed my profession in 1975: training as a police officer and several years of service in Cologne , Dortmund and later Werl as a motorcycle police officer . During this time, he dealt with book illustrations - including a work on the history of the policeman - as well as drawings for the police union newspaper.

His abilities were really discovered at an event organized by the daily newspaper Westfalenpost (WP). Tomicek applied there as a quick draftsman. From 1982 onwards he put local topics on paper as satirical, pictorial commentaries. Since 1984 WP (main editorial office Hagen) has also been printing caricatures by Jürgen Tomicek in its national section. Tomicek was funded mainly by Ralf Rensmann, art historian and head of the WP local editorial office in Werl:

“His pointy pen never moved on the tightrope for cold cynicism . Rather, he is an artist under the dome of fine irony . Tomicek dips the mighty of the continents, the big heads of history in the ink of the human. His pen turns the title characters into people like you and me. "

- Ralf Rensmann

This is probably one of the reasons why none of the “victims” have sued the cartoonist for insulting them.

Jürgen Tomicek, who sees himself as a “ symbiosis of journalist and artist”, now sends one to three of his pen drawings - some colored - to around 50 editorial offices in Germany, Austria and Switzerland every day. From the Aachener Zeitung and the Kölnische Rundschau in the west to the major Berlin newspapers and the Freie Presse (Chemnitz) in the east and from the Flensburger Tageblatt in the north to the Münchner Merkur , the Augsburger Allgemeine and the New Day (Weiden) in the south its area of distribution.

Today the freelance cartoonist lives and works in Werl-Westönnen . After he got married in 1984, he lived there with his wife and their children.
