The Free Press is the regional daily newspaper for the former district of Chemnitz and was in East Germany as the largest circulation regional newspaper . It is the largest subscription newspaper in Saxony . The sold circulation is 210,754 copies, a decrease of 51.6 percent since 1998.

history

The Free Press was before the turn with a circulation of 663,700 copies as the largest circulation regional daily newspaper of the GDR . It appeared since its merger with the Volksstimme (SED organ in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district , not to be confused with the Magdeburg daily of the same name ) since January 1, 1963 as the organ of the SED district leadership of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district. It got its name from the regional daily newspaper for the districts of Zwickau / city and Zwickau / country that was published in Zwickau before the merger.

The Free Press was not, like most other GDR newspapers by the Treuhand agency put up for privatization. It went without tender for the equivalent of 100 million euros to Medien Union GmbH, based in Ludwigshafen am Rhein, which also publishes the daily newspaper Die Rheinpfalz . The Rheinische Post and Axel Springer Verlag had also applied for the Free Press .

As Der Spiegel researched, the direct sale was due to an intervention by Chancellor Helmut Kohl , who had campaigned for the then head of the Treuhandanstalt for the CDU-affiliated publisher based in his home town of Ludwigshafen am Rhein . Kohl ensured that, with the publisher Dieter Schaub, "a long-time companion of Kohl's from his native Palatinate received today's largest East German newspaper". The case shows similarities to the sale of the Mitteldeutsche Zeitung through an intervention by Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher .

Edition

The Free Press has lost a lot of its circulation in recent years . The number of copies sold has fallen by an average of 3% per year over the past 10 years. Last year it decreased by 3.4%. It is currently 210,754 copies. The share of subscriptions in the circulation sold is 93.7 percent.

particularities

The chess corner, which appeared in the Free Press from 1960 and was managed by Manfred Zucker for decades until his death, was of supraregional importance . The chess compositions by renowned authors from all over the world published there as original prints have borne their name from reprints of the compositions in books and other magazines around the globe. The reader is currently being offered chess reprints from a puzzle publisher.

Press festival

The press festival organized by the newspaper in the Chemnitz Küchwald has a long tradition . It took place 34 times during the GDR era and was revived in 1999. Local, national and international artists are presented. With 160,000 visitors, one of the largest folk festivals in the Free State of Saxony was here in 2009. In 2015 there was no festival due to the development of a new concept. The audience saw a new edition the following year on August 13th.
