Kappel is a district in the west of Chemnitz near the center , which was incorporated as early as 1900. It is bordered by the districts of Kapellenberg , Helbersdorf , Stelzendorf , Schönau and Altendorf . Kappel is a residential suburb and an industrial suburb at the same time. The industrial area between Südring and Neefestrasse is home to well-known companies - the " Freie Presse " prints z. B. there your daily expenses. The “Saxon Industrial Museum” is located at the Kappler Drehe . The reception hall of the former Chemnitz airport is located on Kappler Flur today, but it is part of the history of Helbersdorf.
history
Kappel probably belonged to the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery from the beginning , because it is mentioned in the interest register as "Capella" (= settlement on a chapel) as early as 1200 . In 1402 the city of Chemnitz acquired the eastern part of Kappels (Kapellenberg) from the monastery. The residents of Kappel received duty exemption from the city, in return they had to take part in the maintenance of the Chemnitz city wall. Like most monastery villages, Kappel belonged to the Chemnitz office from 1548 .
Due to the onset of industrialization, aided by the Chemnitz – Zwickau railway line opened in 1858, most of the old buildings, mainly from the 17th and 18th centuries, had to give way to factories - the farming village became an industrial community. While the population was still 227 in 1825, there were already 2,590 in 1880 and 6,557 when it was incorporated in 1900.
There was already a mechanical engineering and cotton spinning trade in Kappel before 1850. Around 1870 a knitting machine factory (from 1888 Maschinenfabrik Kappel AG ), a stocking machine factory and a worsted yarn spinning mill were established. An iron foundry followed in 1876, which in GDR times bore the name of Rudolf Harlaß (VEB foundry "Rudolf Harlaß"). In 1886 a knitwear factory was added. The old tram depot (today the tram museum) existed since 1880. During the GDR era, the “ VEB Fettchemie ” (founded in 1935 as “Böhme Fettchemie”) was located on both sides of Neefestrasse . The former branch of the "VEB Strickwaren Oberlungwitz" at the Kappler Drehe can still be recognized from afar by the large facade lettering. The industrial wasteland of the former "Union Maschinenbaukombinate" can still be recognized by the huge signet on the facade.
The first prefabricated buildings were built on the Kappler slope, on Irkutsker Straße , in the early 1970s . They later belonged to the " Fritz Heckert area ". Schools and day-care centers were also built in the immediate vicinity.
