history

The "Villa Esche"

The history of the Kapellenberg district is closely linked to that of the former "Stollberger Quarter", as this area was once called. Well-heeled citizens of Chemnitz (mostly factory owners) settled here towards the end of the 19th century and had villas built along Parkstrasse . So stands z. B. at the confluence with Haydnstrasse is probably the most famous Chemnitz villa. The building known today as "Villa Esche" was built for the industrialist Herbert Esche in 1902/03 by the Belgian Henry van de Velde in Art Nouveau style. In 1911 he expanded the building on its north side and designed the adjacent park. Not far from Goetheplatz was a tennis club building, also built by van de Velde in 1906. This was demolished in favor of new residential buildings that were built around Goetheplatz in the 1960s. Likewise, the buildings of the "Zimmermannschen Naturheilanstalt" and that of a sanatorium did not survive the Second World War .
