Bernsdorf has been a district in the southeast of Chemnitz since April 1, 1907 . Diverse architecture characterizes this city-center district with over 600 years of history. The district is bounded by railway lines in the north and west and in the east by the B 174 . The neighborhoods Zentrum , Lutherviertel , Gablenz , Reichenhain and Altchemnitz are adjacent .
history
The landlord of Bernsdorf was the Benedictine monastery of St. Marien in Chemnitz. The village was first mentioned in 1402 as "Beroldisdorf" (village of a Berold). Another mention dates back to 1504 ( "Bernstorff" ). Initially, the Bernsdorf corridor almost reached the city walls of Chemnitz, but most of Bernsdorf was sold in 1402 by the Chemnitz monastery to the city council of Chemnitz. The municipal cemetery was built on this site, later known as the “(Alter) Johannisfriedhof” , now known as the “ Park of the Victims of Fascism ” . Like all monastery villages, Bernsdorf , as the smallest monastery village (with only 148 hectares), came to the Chemnitz office in 1548 .
At the end of the 19th century, the population of Bernsdorf increased due to the influx of Chemnitz workers who worked in factories in the nearby town. From 1928 onwards, housing estates were built (including on Wartburgstrasse and in 1930 the Robert-Straube-Hof on Augsburger Strasse ) as well as factories and allotments, whereby the original rural buildings almost completely disappeared.
The new municipal cemetery was built on Reichenhainer Straße in 1874 when the Johannisfriedhof on Zschopauer Straße became too small. The cemetery reached its present size in 1922.
In addition, numerous cultural and sports facilities were created after the incorporation in Chemnitz. In 1910, the Bernsdorfer Schule and the Südbahnhof were inaugurated, in 1925 the summer pool (called “Wikingbad” ) on Bernsdorfer Strasse and in 1938 the Großkampfbahn (previously “Südkampfbahn” , in today's Sportforum ) on Reichenhainer Strasse . After the Second World War, the cycling track (also in today's Sportforum ) was inaugurated in 1950 . In 1969 the indoor swimming pool was opened.
Massive air raids in 1945, especially in the vicinity of the city center, led to great destruction in Bernsdorf . While many vacant lots still exist today, some modern residential complexes were built here in the 1950s, an example of which is the small settlement of Bernsdorfer Plan . The total of eleven three-storey residential buildings with gable roofs are located next to the “Robert-Straube-Hof” and are in a green and quiet location with no disturbing through traffic.
After laying the foundation stone for the "Institute for Mechanics of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR" on Reichenhainer Straße in 1985, Bernsdorf developed into a university location . In 1986 the technical university received the status of a technical university. Construction of the new lecture hall on Reichenhainer Strasse began in 1997. The medium wave transmitter Chemnitz-Bernsdorf was shut down and demolished in the 1990s.
Student district
Today this district of Chemnitz is the center of student life in the Saxon industrial city. The Technical University of Chemnitz is centrally located and with almost 11,000 students it is the third largest Saxon university. The campus has a cafeteria, cinema, student clubs , pubs and sports facilities as well as the nearby Südbahnhof scene . The dense infrastructural network with all supply facilities and the local transport connections are further advantages of the quarter. With the establishment of the new “technology park” , the conditions for young start-ups are also being created in the district.
