Helbersdorf which located in the south district of Chemnitz , extends from eastern Chemnitz River to Stollberger road to the west. The eastern part is taken up by the city park and the old town center, the entire western part by the so-called building area I of the former " Fritz Heckert area ". The districts of Kapellenberg , Altchemnitz , Markersdorf , Morgenleite and Kappel border on Helbersdorf . Originally, the Helbersdorfer Flur extended over Stollberger Straße to Schönau , which is why the former airport, now located in the Kappel district, is described in more detail in this article.

history

Waldhufendorf , first mentioned in 1316 as "Helbigsdorf" (village of a Helwig), came to the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery in 1375 together with the Rabenstein rulers . After the abbey was dissolved, Helbersdorf was placed under the Chemnitz office.

The Helbersdorfers violated the Chemnitz ban miles in 1522 , so that the loom was taken away from the local linen weaver. The Thirty Years' War raged in Helbersdorf as well, as in the neighboring communities of Markersdorf, Kappel and Altchemnitz - many buildings were razed to the ground by Holck's troops in 1632.

There was no industrialization, but Helbersdorf developed into a residential suburb for Chemnitz workers. The Helbersdorf residents themselves also worked in the nearby factories, which is why the town was incorporated into Chemnitz in 1909.

Since 1974 the western part of Helbersdorf has been occupied by the new prefabricated buildings of the "Fritz Heckert" residential area. For this, a few dilapidated old buildings were demolished. Since 1998 this part of the "Heckert" has also been affected by urban redevelopment. Some buildings, which were only 25 years old, have been removed or extensively renovated.

Airport

In Chemnitz there had been flight operations at the old airport on Zschopauer Strasse since 1911. A new airport was built in 1925/26. The landing of an airship in 1930 and the largest land plane in the world at the time, the Junkers G 38 , in 1932 caused a sensation among the people of Chemnitz. From the 1930s the airport became too small for regular air traffic, so that only machines for sightseeing flights and agricultural and glider planes took off here. From 1974 the prefabricated housing estate " Fritz-Heckert-Area " was built on the site of the former airport . The "Ikarus" reception building of the old Chemnitz airport was spared from demolition, only the runway was built on.

city Park

The “Stadtpark” extends as a 6 km long strip from north of Treffurthstrasse in the Kapellenberg district to the beginning of the Harthwald in the Markersdorf district. Only in Helbersdorf, where the larger part is located, was it laid out according to plan; the southern part (from the Südring ) is more reminiscent of a forest.

As early as 1798, the then owner of the area, the Mayor of Chemnitz, Dr. Gotthold Leberecht Sachse, between today's Straßburger-, Becker- and Rößlerstraße, build a small private park called "Sachses Ruhe". This park was offered for sale to the city of Chemnitz in 1884. The town councilor Ernst Otto Clauss donated the purchase price , he also initiated the renaming in "Bürgerpark". The expansion of the park began immediately. City councilor Fürchtegott Moritz Albert Voigt donated an area adjacent to the park to the city in 1890 for further expansion. With the straightening of the Chemnitz River, another part of the site fell to. In 1900 the "Voigtsche Park" (today the area around the small city park pond) was opened. In 1904/05 Otto Werner had the parking lot that is now named after him laid out. Now the park had an area of 5.6 hectares, but it was clear that the park was still worth expanding. Additional plots of land were bought for the expansion in 1908, and the first groundbreaking took place in 1909. The large city park pond was built in 1910/11 when a brook coming from Markersdorf was dammed. The construction of a park tavern was not realized due to the outbreak of the First World War. In the part of the city park after today's Südring in the direction of Harthwald, a soccer field was laid out in 1913/14.

During the Second World War, the park was damaged and painstaking work was done to restore it. In 1950 the “Vogelsche Park” on Beckerstrasse was integrated into the city park .
