Schönau , the district incorporated in 1950, is located in the west of Chemnitz . It is bordered by the districts of Rottluff , Altendorf , Kappel , Stelzendorf and Siegmar .

history

Schönau

former manor Schönau

The former estate Schönau was first mentioned in a document as "Schoena" in 1300 (1353 Schonowe = settlement in the beautiful [Kappelbach-] Aue) and came in 1375 to the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery . The Schönau manor was the largest of the mostly small farms, most of which were moved into the manor by the 18th century. Some of the abandoned farms were also used as building ground for the onset of industrialization. Since 1838 Schönau has formed its own rural community.

A glove factory was established at the end of the 18th century. At the beginning of the 19th century a hosiery and machine and vehicle construction (" Wanderer ") followed. After Neustadt was incorporated into Schönau, the merger with the city of Siegmar to form the city of Siegmar-Schönau was completed in 1935 .

Until the end of the 19th century, Schönau belonged to the "Nikolai" community in "Chemnitz", whose church was located near today's Falkeplatz on Stollberger Strasse . After the church had to be closed in 1882 for structural reasons and the plan to build another church for the community had been in place for a long time, the newly founded Schönau community quickly broke up and built its own church. The Schönau Church was built in 1885 and was consecrated in 1887. It has been called Luther's name since 1936 .

Neustadt

The former Neustadt was not built until the 16th century (Naustadt = newly built home) . Poor farmers settled around the Höckericht manor (first mentioned in 1375 in connection with the Rabenstein rulership ). First of all, Neustadt was after the “St. Nikolai ”parish in Chemnitz, then to Schönau, to which it was incorporated in 1922.

Because the Autobahn 72 , which runs directly through Neustadt, forms today's border between Schönau and Siegmar, the district has now disappeared from the city maps. The only witness left is Neustädter Strasse . Until May / June 2004 the "Gasthof Neustadt" was still on Zwickauer Straße . The former town hall of Neustadt is still preserved, but was only partially rebuilt after being severely damaged in the Second World War. The building was extensively renovated after 1990 and is currently used as a residential building.

economy

As in neighboring Siegmar, the industry is also very strong here. The “Messe Chemnitz” / “ Chemnitz Arena ” (today Kappel district) is located here between Zwickauer and Neefestrasse , the “Braustolz” brewery “Am Feldschlößchen” and a “Siemens” branch on Neefestrasse .

traffic

The B 173 (Neefestraße) and a railway line to Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Zwickau runs through the district . The A 72 forms today's western corridor boundary of Schönau. The Südring , the intersection of which is currently being expanded, crosses Neefestrasse .

The CVAG , has opened up the area with the bus lines 24, 39 and 47 54th Since 1988, tram line 1 has ended on Popowstrasse not far from Schönau Church on the grounds of the former manor. Until May 17, 1980, the old line 1, which was discontinued in 1981, reached Reichenbrand . From March 2008, line 1 is now called 2, because it was merged with line 2 to Bernsdorf. Due to construction work at Chemnitz main station, line 1 was used again from May 1, 2011, but not to the main station, but only to Straße der Nations, where it changes to line 4 towards Hutholz. The bus lines that run through Schönau have also been called differently since 2008, namely 41, 43, 26, 23 (previous line of 23, which only ran in 2008, was called 42), 73 and N16 (night line). Some lines are completely new and others only operate under a different name.
