history

Peter-Pauls-Kirche in Mittelbach

Mittelbach, laid out as a forest hoof village , was first mentioned in a document in 1331. This document confirms to the place that it is allowed to have an inn. At first Mittelbach belonged to the Rabenstein lordship , but probably came to the Chemnitz Benedictine monastery before 1375 and then to the Chemnitz office in 1548 - only one manor was unaffected by the latter. Hosiery knitting began in 1729, but there was little industry here. In the 19th century there were still two brick factories. The town hall was built in 1908. On January 1st, 1999 Mittelbach was incorporated into Chemnitz.

Mining in Mittelbach

Mittelbacher "Schachthaus" (winding tower, from 1860) with a heap around it

Foothills of the Lugau-Oelsnitzer hard coal seam (more precisely: "Lugau- Würschnitzer hard coal seam") reached to Mittelbach and Harthau .

In search of hard coal , the "Dufour Shaft" was sunk at the "Landgraben" between Mittelbach and Wüstenbrand from 1857 . Around 1860 the "Schachthaus" (Landgraben No. 8), an early winding tower , was built on a new shaft nearby. By 1863 this new shaft had been sunk to a depth of 664 cubits . As far as "Dresdner Ellen" were meant, which were valid in Saxony from 1858 , this would have been a shaft depth of just over 376 m. Since coal mining was not profitable here, activities were stopped in 1863. A dump was heaped around the house , which is why it appears to be on a hill.

The listed Mittelbach "Schachthaus" has been preserved to this day. It served as a residential building until around the 1970s, before it became vacant at the end of the GDR era, in the 1980s. It was privatized in 1993 and has been used as a guest house and party location ever since. It stands alone on an elevation in the middle of a field and is surrounded by trees. The monument list means Bach writes, "three-storey building, two floors quarried stone, a bullet placed later."

The Neuoelsnitz – Wüstenbrand railway line has existed since 1858 and also runs through Mittelbach. However, a breakpoint was not set up until 1896. Passenger traffic on the route ceased in 1990.
