About this picture

The district of Chemnitz was an administrative unit in the Chemnitz district of the GDR from May 17, 1990, and in the Free State of Saxony in the Federal Republic of Germany from October 3, 1990 to July 31, 1994 .

geography

The district was on the northern edge of the Ore Mountains . With its important industrial locations, such as B. Burgstädt , Limbach-Oberfrohna , Grüna or Hartmannsdorf , the district largely encompassed Chemnitz , which was the seat of the district.

Neighboring districts were (clockwise from the north): Rochlitz , Hainichen , Flöha , Zschopau , Stollberg , Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Glauchau and, almost as an enclave, the city of Chemnitz .

history

Map of the Chemnitz district (around 1992)

As a geographical unit, the Amtshauptmannschaft Chemnitz already existed in the Kingdom of Saxony and later the Karl-Marx-Stadt-Land district in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district in the GDR .

The district of Chemnitz was created on May 17, 1990 by the municipal constitution of the GDR from the district of Chemnitz-Land by renaming.
