geography
location
The Leipzig-Land district was traversed by the White Elster , the Pleiße and the Parthe . It was in the west of the Leipzig district .
Neighboring areas
The district of Leipzig-Land bordered clockwise in the north, beginning with the districts of Delitzsch , Eilenburg , Wurzen , Grimma , Borna , Hohenmölsen , Weißenfels , Merseburg and Saalkreis .
It completely enclosed the city of Leipzig .
Natural space
The district of Leipzig was located in the Leipzig lowland bay with its flat to undulating stretches of land. Ice Age deposits, which consisted mainly of clay, resulted in fertile arable land. Large open -cast lignite mines took up large areas in the southwest . Only the wide and wooded valley landscapes of the White Elster brought variety to the uniform landscape. Even the ice age terminal moraine , north of Taucha z. B. the 126 m high Black Mountain, had been cleared since the Middle Ages. The lowlands of the White Elster ( riparian forest Leipzig ) and the Parthe near Taucha (Partheaue makers) were designated as landscape protection areas.
history
1,874 were in Saxony Kingdom as part of a comprehensive administrative reform new district governor teams and Amtshauptmann teams established. The Leipzig administrative authority was renamed the Leipzig district at the beginning of 1939 . After 1945 it belonged to the state of Saxony and thus to the GDR since 1949 . The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states in the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the five remaining states of the GDR . On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles, whereby there were also changes of area beyond the borders of the former 5 countries. The Leipzig district was assigned to the Leipzig district , the city of Leipzig became the seat of the district .
During the administrative reform of 1952, the Leipzig district emerged as the only one in Saxony with an increase in communities (59:65). He just gave

economy
Agriculture and forestry played only a subordinate role in the district. In addition to wheat, sugar beets, field forage crops and potatoes are grown. The proportion of garden crops was particularly large in the south and west of the district. Nevertheless, the arable land was relatively small. The mining of lignite took up large areas in the southern district. The Zwenkau open- cast lignite mine and the Espenhain dominated the mining area . There were also settlement, industrial and traffic areas. The district was heavily industrialized. Important companies in Schkeuditz were VEB Maschinen- und Apparatebau, which produced systems for air and cooling technology, and VEB Brühlpelz for fur. Furniture, paper, roofing felt, sugar, malt and drinks were also made. The production profile in Taucha, Markkleeberg and Markranstädt included mechanical engineering, textile, electrotechnical, chemical, furniture, fur and brewing industries. Rural communities such as Engelsdorf, Böhlitz-Ehrenberg and Eythra were also industrial locations.
Other important companies in the district included:
- VEB Goldring Markkleeberg
- VEB Akkumulatorenbau Markkleeberg
- VEB Druckguss Borsdorf
- VEB Brauhaus Markranstädt
